i all,
Wow, how time flies. It seems like only yesterday that I was writing my
welcome column as your new President in the first issue ofthe 2022 CIM.
Now it's time to hand over the reins to the 2024-2025 CIS President, Yaochu Jin.
Yaochu will do a great job for CIS. It's been a great privilege and honor for me to
serve as President, and really, it's been a blast. Both the field ofcomputational intelligence
and the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society have experienced huge
gains, and I'm happy to have had a front row seat these last two years. Rather than
attempt to summarize everything that's been happening, ifyou are a glutton for punishment,
you can read the other 7 ofmy editorials (yeah, right?) to get a sense of the
vibrant and growing community we have in CIS. In signing off as President, I have
two parting comments.
First, I am immensely grateful to all of the dedicated and talented volunteers and
staff who have propelled CIS to ever greater heights. While our exceptional staff is
the glue that holds us together, no IEEE Society can function, and flourish, without
a large number of committed members who give of their time and talent to tackle
the myriad positions across the Society. CIS is blessed in this regard. CIS volunteers
and staff form such a great group of people from all around the planet and I wish to
thank each and every one for their service.
My second message is for our student members, YPs, and those who just
have not had the time or opportunity to volunteer. Please consider increasing
the service component of your career. What is certainly true for me, and for all
active volunteers I talk to, is that you get way more out of volunteer positions
than the effort you expend. I can't count all the dear friends I've made from
around the world as a result of the many roles I've embraced over the years.
The close camaraderie with all of the smart people who make up the working
CIS has helped my technical career as well. It's clearly worth the effort, particularly
to " pay it forward " .
I will miss this position, but this is the way it should be. As always, feel free to contact
me at kellerj@missouri.edu with your thoughts, suggestions, questions, and innovative
ideas, even as I move into the Past President role. I'm happy to hear from you
and will pass along your ideas to the new President. Please stay safe and healthy. I hope
to see many ofyou at CIS events over the upcoming years.
