15 m when the marker size is 400 cm 2. The proposed visual
marker is an improvement compared to GPS, which is
unable to locate obstacles indoors. After the system detects a
marker, the visually impaired user can obtain various information, such as current location, through audio and tactile
feedback generated from a mobile phone. In addition, the
obstacle detection function can help people with visual
impairment walk freely in unconstrained indoor environments. Most obstacles have a 70% detection rate. Therefore,
the proposed system can help people who are visually
impaired arrive at their destinations safely without full assistance from others.

and Technology. His research interests include multimedia
signal processing, radiography imaging, efficient display,
and automation.
Shanq-Jang Ruan (sjruan@mail.ntust.edu.tw) is a distinguished professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science
and Technology (NTUST) and chair of the Graduate Institute
of Applied Science and Technology at NTUST. His research
interests include power-efficient circuits and systems, image
