Recent advances in
consumer electronics.

ur everyday lives are crammed with consumer electronics (CE) systems, ranging from smartphones, smart devices, set-top boxes, video consoles,
and tablets to washing machines and kitchen appliances. A CE device is heavily reliant on audio and
video technologies for its successful smart functioning. With
the evolution of these sophisticated devices and technologies,
data (such as images, sensitive information, and so forth)
security has become a major concern that requires immediate
attention. Another facet of these technologies that needs attention is optimization of data redundancy, coverage area, and
energy expenditure of CE systems, such as video devices.
This special section aims to publish novel solutions with
respect to these aspects of audio and video technologies for
CE applications.
In the article "Image Concealing Using Steganography and
Secret Sharing Scheme," a new data-hiding technique that
uses the concept of steganography and a secret image sharing scheme is presented. Maroti Deshmukh, Mohit Rajput,
Neeta Nain, and Mushtaq Ahmed propose data hiding at two
levels. At the first level, the encryption process is done using
steganography, whereas at the second level, a secret sharing
scheme is performed.
The problem of safe, secure, and prompt end-to-end transmission of medical reports through encryption and audiobased steganography is addressed by Biswajita Datta,
Prithwish Kumar Pal, and Samir Kumar Bandyopadhyay in
"Audio as a Carrier of Medical Report for Visa Processing to
Protect Transmissible Disease." First, encryption of the medical report of a visa applicant is performed using reversible

two's complement arithmetic, followed by subsequent hiding
within an audio file using steganography.
In the article "A Distributed Multievent Ensnaring Scheme
Based on Scalar Leader Determination for Data Redundancy
Minimization," Sushree Bibhuprada, B. Priyadarshini, and
Suvasini Panigrahi present a novel work that is capable of
achieving impressive, enhanced event-area coverage by actuating the least number of camera sensors while concurrently mitigating the redundancy in data transmission.
We are pleased with the contents of this special section
though, we confess, only some selected problems on audio and
video technologies have been addressed. We thank all the
authors and reviewers for their timely efforts as well as the editor-in-chief for his support.
