This article aims to provide an overview of password recovery systems, including the basic concepts of password recovery, the popular hardware platforms ranging from the traditional application-specific integrated circuits and field-programmable gate arrays to modern graphic process units and hybrid CPU-FPGA chips, the password guessing methods, and the acceleration techniques applicable to crack various password encryption algorithms.
