and Thalheimer,6 the systems used Bluetooth,
and in the work by Slamet et al.,7 the system
used Zigbee. In GrowFruit, we have used GSM
TCP RS485 to get long-distance communication
benefits. For storage, in the work by Das et al.,1
and Thalheimer,6 the system used an SD card,
and in the work by Slamet et al.,7 the system
used the cloud. We have used both EPROM and
cloud. After a periodic interval, our system
stores the data in the cloud. This in turn helps
us to store and maintain a large amount of data.
Moreover, as the data transmission occurs after
a periodic interval instead of continuous data
transmission, the network traffic remains normal.
Hence, we may say that GrowFruit is much
favorable than the existing solutions.
CONCLUSION
We have designed and implemented an IoTbased
real-time growth rate monitoring device to
measure fruit or stem growth-rate under open
field conditions. The system measures the
changes in the fruit or stem perimeter, yielding
significant information about the growth. The
growth-rate data is stored inside the EPROM and
periodically transmitted to the cloud for storage.
The device does not require periodicmaintenance
for continuous long-termmeasurement purposes.
