2022 Gaming Event:
Battle Royale 14 in
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

& BATTLE ROYALE 14 IS the 14th annual gaming
event that took place from March 4-6, 2022, in
Ottawa, ON, Canada. This charity event, hosted by
the IEEE Carleton and IEEE uOttawa student branches,
fundraised over $1000 for the Ottawa Food
Bank. This event also housed a game jam,which is a
hackathon but specifically focused on game design
and development. Technical workshops and a networking
opportunity with industry professionals
were offered to game jam attendees, opening the
door for students to learn about game development
and industry-standard tools and technologies.
This year's Battle Royale event was successful
on all fronts, whether that be the enthusiasmor the
friendly competition between teams and schools.
To quantify the success through attendance, the
number of participants at this year's installment of
Battle Royale was substantially higher and doubled
from last year. Combining all those who attended
the networking event, game jam, and gaming tournaments,
Battle Royale 14 boasted a total of
138 attendees with 33 teams divided among the various
subevents.
As per tradition, Battle Royale hosted tournaments
for a multitude of competitive online games.

Over the years, due to varying pop culture, Battle
Royale has seen a huge assortment in the games
that it offered. Past games included the likes of
Hearthstone, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,
Super Smash Bros, and much more. This year's
event offered a diverse panel of games, including
VALORANT, League of Legends, and Rocket League,
all having no less than eight teams competing. In
particular, VALORANT, the relatively newer game in
style, was thecenter of theshowwith almost 70 total
players competing-more than the total number of
attendees in Battle Royale 13. With online games
proving to grow in popularity, especially due to
COVID-19, Battle Royale will undoubtedly continue
to expand and grow in the future.
Although the main attraction was the gaming
tournaments, Battle Royale 14 also drew a good
deal of attention from the game jam and networking
portions of the event. Part of this attraction was in
part due to the various game studios that Battle
Royale 14 partnered up with, some of which are
already big names on the international playing field.
These studios include Snowed In Studios, which is a
part of the larger Ottawa gaming studio known as
Keyword Studios; Ubisoft Halifax, which is associated
with the Ubisoft branch and set in Nova Scotia,
Canada; Propel VR, a strong industry leader in VR
and AR technology that simultaneously develops
training applications specifically for VR; and
