Part I

& I WELCOME THE readers to the sixth issue of
the year 2022, the November/December issue of
the IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine (MCE).
INTELLIGENT INTERNET
OF VEHICULAR THINGS
This issue of MCE is dedicated to the Intelligent
Internet of Vehicular Things (IIoVT).
Today, with the emergence of consumer
technologies and the Internet of Things (IoT),
several applications, such as smart vehicles
and innovative transportation systems, are
increasing. It deploys a huge amount of connected
vehicles, such as trucks, cars, bikes, and
scooters, known as the IIoVT. The fast development
of such vehicles connected to the Internet
enables various consumer services, including
traffic management and improved road safety,
route recommendation, emergency prevention,
and entertainment. Integrating various city
vehicular networks with real-time information
data, such as vehicle numbers, vehicle speed,
fuel consumption, navigation, weather, traffic
lights, road conditions, and others, enables its
connection to the Internet. At the same time, it
communicates via Vehicle to Vehicle, Vehicle
to Road, Vehicle to Sensor, and Vehicle to
Everything in the vehicular network. These
communication facilities provide consumers

with sensors, IoT, and consumer electronics
devices, an amalgamation of C3-connection,
client, and cloud. The IoVT generates a vehicular
network infrastructure with autovehicles
and uses consumer electronics, IoT devices,
and wireless communication technologies.
Although the IIoVT has various abovementioned
benefits, it still has numerous challenges,
including Big Data, single point of
failure, availability, scalability, security, trust,
and privacy in the present transportation infrastructure
with vehicular networks.
Research and development from academia
and industry are underway to address many of
these challenges. Therefore, it is my pleasure to
introduce a collection of high-quality articles
dedicated to IIoVT in this issue.
COLUMNS
Bits versus Electrons-Distributed Cooperation:
The author shares his experience using his
home as a living laboratory for connected systems.
After describing the journey, the author
presents the challenges that were faced in keeping
the systems operational since he still faces
the limitations of what is available, such as the
design of Wi-Fi. One conclusion is that there is
not a separate " Internet of Things. "
Security-Can Open and AI-Enabled 6G RAN Be
Secured?: Open interface and artificial intelligence
(AI) are vital enablers for the next generation of 6G
mobile networks, and ensuring that security is critical
for bringing the 6G vision to fruition. Security
