play an exceptional role in managing the resource
and security concerns at the edge devices. For
instance, AI-enable key matching schemes will
ensure the efficient utilization of resources in the
context of computation complexities at the edge
side by keeping in view the limited resources of
patient wearable devices. Despite this, they will
remove anomalies from the data at the edge side,
which will help to improve the communication
metrics of HC-IoT applications, because only necessary
information should be transmitted and
shared in the network.
OPEN SECURITY CHALLENGES
In the preceding sections, we have talked
about the existing security counteraction schemes
that have been used to defend against different
types of attacks at the edge side of HC-IoT applications.
Moreover, we have observed that the present
literature still leaves too many flaws and lose
pools to counter newly adopted or modified
attacks. Herein, we have highlighted some of the
open security challenges in the context of present
literature limitations. To continue, the different
domains, whichhave been observed as open security
challenges include the security of edge layer
devices, data preservation, secure machine learning
algorithms, interoperability or cross-domain
connectivity, authentication time and complexity,
secure lightweight protocols for edge devices connectivity,
and communication, secure hardware,
and operating system. In the consequent sections,
we have explored the aforestated security challenges
to familiarize the readers with them and
also provide an atmosphere to them in the context
of future research directions to solve these problems
cost effectively.
Edge Layer Security ! Challenges 1
In the literature evaluation phase, we have
noted that the edge layer of HC-IoT devices enables
and provides different services to the customers
and involved stakeholders. Despite this,
it also offers some security vulnerabilities that
are assumed to be extra room for an attacker to
intercept the legal devices or communication of
the network, because the edge layer itself needs
reliable security protection.

Therefore, securing the edge layer devices of
HC-IoT applications is not a trivial task, such as
data centers in the cloud, because these need
lightweight authentication and data privacy
schemes that may not be present physically or
administered by a security professional. For the
redressal of this problem, additional research
efforts are required to design lightweight reliable
authentication and data preservation schemes
for the edge device of HC-IoT applications.
Interoperability Security ! Challenges 2
In the literature section, we have noted that
interoperability with security in EEC is another
very challenging task because the existing techniques
lack to manage this problem efficiently. To
explore, HC-IoT applications contain different vendor
devices that have different operating systems,
hardware, and firmware. Therefore, they need reliable,
adjustable, and interoperable security techniques
to ensure the authentication of legitimate
devices and the privacy of transmitted data in real
time. Although the literature suggests some techniques,
somehow, they are unable to manage this
task with scalability and expandability. Therefore,
we acknowledge the research community to work
in this domain and design new interoperable
secure authentication protocols, firmware, hardware,
and software for these networks.
Anomaly Detection at Edge Side ! Challenge 3
In the literature, we have noticed that anomaly
detection at the edge side of the HC-IoT applications
is a challenging task, because the current
literature uses intrusion detection system and
intrusion detection and prevention system
(IDPS) at layers two and three to manage the
aforesaid problem. At the edge side of the network,
the detection of anomalies is still a new
concept, because sensor devices manage different
tasks at this layer, and collect information
according to their assigned task. But it is very
hard for them to differentiate between legal and
illegal traffic. Therefore, we advise the research
community to pay attention to this important
problem and devise new reliable anomaly detection
techniques that could be capable of detecting
malicious traffic at the edge of the network.
