During the annual Region 9 meeting,
our Society's Region 9 representative,
Jorge Him from Panama, who is also the
treasurer for Region 9, gave a short presentation about our Society and showed one
of the "Secret Agent Videos." He is a longtime member of the CE Society, and he is
also very active in the IEEE.
Last year, 2014 CE Society President
Stefan Mozar attended the Argencon,
which was held in San Carlos de Bariloch, Rio Negro, Argentina. He gave an
invited presentation on behalf of the CE

Society, which had a table staffed by
Executive Administrator Charlotte Kobert. Our table generated a lot of interest
and quite a few people signed up for CE
Society membership. One thing that surprised us was that the CE Society is a
well-kept secret in Region 9. Many
IEEE members did not know that there
was a CE Society! After our visit to
Agencon and the introduction at this
year's Region 9 meeting, we hope more
people will become aware of the Society
and that they will consider joining.

In the Spotlight: South Brazil

he South Brazil Chapter of the CE
Society is one of our newest and
smallest Chapters. It was formed on
1 September 2011 with approximately 20 members. The Chapter was originally formed by Gustavo Moreira Calixto
(chair), Marcelo Knorich Zuffo (vice
chair), Laisa Costa (treasurer), and Rafael
Herrero (secretary).
Calixto is a Ph.D. candidate at the
Polytechnical School of the University
of São Paulo (USP) and a Digital TV
projects head at the Interdisciplinary
Center in Interactive Technologies
(CITI), a think tank center at USP. He is
currently a computer engineering lecturer in the College of National Service for
Commercial Training (SENAC-SP). His
research focuses on multiple-screen
interaction and pervasive computing. He
has also performed research activities in
the University of Texas at Austin in the
Communications and Applied Computing groups.
Marcelo Zuffo is a full professor at the
Polytechnical School of USP and coordinator of CITI. His main study focus is
related to virtual reality, digital TV, and
embedded systems.

Laisa Costa is a Ph.D. candidate at
the Polytechnical School of USP and a
Mobile Learning project head at CITI.
Her main research area is focused on
swarm computing and the Internet of
Things. She has collaborated with the
University of Califor nia Berkely
Swarm Lab.
Celso Kurashima is an associate professor at the engineering college of the
Federal University of ABC (UFABC),
located in the São Paulo metropolitan
region. His main research interests are
related to 3-D immersion for digital TV
applications.

The Chapter Executive Committee
meets when the opportunity or need
arises, for example, to discuss planning
for an event, about four to five meetings
per year. The Chapter currently arranges
two technical meetings per year. One
such meeting, held in October 2014, was
"How Do You Program a 64,000 Core
Single Chip CPU?" This was a seminar
with a hands-on practical session about
parallel computing involving single
boards from Adapteva. About 40 students
and professionals attended this meeting.
In October 2013, the Chapter organized a seminar "The Future of TV."
