Success Stories from the IEEE CE Society Future Directions Committee on IoT
The current activities in the Internet of Things (IoT) are focused
on the architecture and protocols for efficient interconnection
of heterogeneous things and the creation of value-added
services. However, the success of the IoT strongly depends
on the adaptation of IoT products and services by end users.
The IEEE Consumer Electronics (CE) Society Future Directions
Committee on IoT recognizes the importance of consumers
and the benefits the IoT can bring to the public. To promote
the creation of an IoT ecosystem with consumers at the core
and development of consumer-centric IoT (CC-IoT) applications,
the IoT group undertook several successful initiatives in 2014.
During the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Consumer
Electronics (ICCE)-Berlin, Tom Coughlin presented an overview
of the objectives of the IoT group.
The group submitted a special session proposal on CC-IoT
to the 2014 IEEE Global Conference on Consumer Electronics
(GCCE) in Japan. The proposal was accepted. Tom was the chair
of the session, while Joseph Wei and I were the cochairs. It
received relevant articles, which were reviewed by the chairs,
and was completely integrated into the conference. The GCCE
Technical Program Committee chairs selected the final six
papers to be presented in the session.

SPeCiAl SeSSionS on CC-iot
At SoCiety ConferenCeS
Following the success of a special session
at the 2014 IEEE Global Conference on
Consumer Electronics (GCCE), we are
planning on continuing such sessions at
CE Society conferences. The 2015 IEEE
International Symposium on Consumer
Electronics (ISCE) in Madrid, Spain, the
2015 IEEE International Conference on
Consumer Electronics (ICCE)-Berlin,
and IEEE GCCE 2015 in Japan are confirmed candidates for this initiative. The
IEEE ISCE 2015 Conference Committee
has extended its support by confirming
the special session, and a call for papers
has been released. The session is completely integrated into the conference,
and the papers received will undergo the
same review, registration, and presentation processes as other papers in the conference. Proposals for the other two
conferences are being prepared.

And tutoriAlS
The first panel discussion took place during ICCE 2015 in Las Vegas. We are

The second major initiative was to organize a panel
discussion on IoT during ICCE 2015 in Las Vegas. I was the chair
and one of the panelists, while Bob Frankston, Joe Decuir,
and V.P. Thinagaran Perumal joined the panel discussion. Bob
shared his views on connecting things and people, borderless
connectivity, and API first approach for discovery. He concluded
the talk with issues (privacy, big data) that need to be considered
for the long term. Joe began with elements of IoT, fitness
devices, and smart clothing and gradually moved into connecting
these devices together using Bluetooth Smart. He also provided
insights on wearable technologies and their applications as well
as smart and connected homes. Thinagaran approached IoT
from the standardization perspective with details on current
standards activities and the benefits of such efforts. Finally, I gave
a presentation on the fundamental technical aspects of IoT and
how IoT can act as an enabler for various smart city initiatives.
I'd like to take the opportunity to thank Tom and Stefan
Mozar for their support. The IoT group will continue its efforts
on promoting CC-IoT through such activities during 2015. Stay
tuned for our upcoming announcements.

sessions at IEEE ISCE 2015, ICCE-Taiwan 2015, ICCE-Berlin 2015, IEEE
GCCE 2015, and the 2015 IEEE Global
Humanitarian Technology Conference
(GHTC) in Seattle, Washington. Particular focus is being given to GHTC 2015,
which brings together people working on
humanitarian technologies. Currently, a
panel session is being planned on the
humanitarian aspects of IoT and how it
can improve various societal challenges.

White PAPer on iot
The CE Society conferences are attracting research papers dealing with various aspects of the IoT. This work item
is dedicated to setting up a group that
will achieve the following:
▼ contribute to a white paper with its
main focus on CC-IoT
▼ consolidate IoT-related projects and
promote participation from industry
and academia
▼ identify and collect CC use cases
and requirements
▼ establish a 12-month time frame for
the white paper.

The item is already approved by
Tom Coughlin, vice president of Future
Directions, and the work is expected to
begin in April 2015.

SuMMer SChool on CC-iot
The idea is to organize a summer school
to encourage CC-IoT during the summer
of 2015. A tentative plan, schedule, and
budget are already prepared and are being
reviewed by the CE Society Conference
Committee. V.P. Thinagaran and I are
driving the idea, with other CE Society
members supporting it. The summer
school will target master's and Ph.D. students as well as industry and IoT enthusiasts. A rapid prototyping session is also
being planned for the summer school.
