remainder of 2015 and into 2016. As they
say, mark your calendars for those coming
to your corner of the world.

PUBLICATIONS ROUND-UP
We have another new column, "Publications Round-Up," from Stu Lipoff,
the CE Society VP of publications. Stu
provides some insight into the multiple
IEEE publications with which the CE
Society is directly partnered. Yes, in
addition to IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics and this venerable
magazine, the CE Society is involved in
a double-handful of other IEEE publications whose field of interest overlaps
with ours. Society members get discounted subscriptions on these journals, and, as with our conferences, they
provide our memberships with additional benefits and revenue streams for
the Society. Anyway, you'll learn all
about this in Stu's new column, and in
each issue he will feature a new journal
or transaction with which the CE Society is partnered.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS
In this issue there is a new "Future
Directions" (FD) column. You may not
know it, but the CE Society is the first
IEEE Society to have its own FD committee, which is run by our very own
Tom Coughlin. I'm pretty sure that you
know Tom and his many contributions
to IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine, so I'm very happy to support his
work with the CE Society and IEEE FD.
This issue has a couple of short articles on Internet of Things activities
within the CE Society-both completed
and planned for later in 2015. This Internet of Things group is a subcommittee
of the FD committee, and it is probably
the most active one at this point in
time. We also have an article and student competition announcement from
Tom himself-this is a follow-up activity
after last year's series of successful Safe
Advanced Mobile Power (SAMP) workshops. Interestingly, SAMP looks like it
is becoming a new core IEEE Future
Directions initiative, retitled as IEEEBattery, and I expect we'll hear more on
this in a future issue of IEEE Consumer
Electronics Magazine.

FEATURE ARTICLES

GREEN CLOUD COMPUTING

Feature articles are at the core of every
issue of IEEE Consumer Electronics
Magazine. This issue covers a range of
topical subjects.

In a previous article [2], I commented on
the energy usage of cloud computing. It
is nice to see that many of the problems
noted in that previous article have been
tackled head-on by the CE sector over the
last few years. Old desktop computers
now lie obsolete, replaced by low-power
smartphones and tablets, and low-energy
LED and OLED panels are replacing
power-hungry TV sets.
It is nice to see that other industry sectors are also stepping up. Debra A. Horn
from the Product & Systems Assurance
division of IBM Systems in Rochester,
New York, writes about the Electronic
Product Environmental Assessment Tool
(EPEAT) "Green Procurement Criteria
for Servers" that is currently in the process of being finalized. Some or all of the
draft criteria will be available by mid2015, and the IEEE anticipates finalizing
and publishing its standard in 2016. It's
one more step toward a more sustainable
ICT infrastructure for the planet.

MIND-MACHINE INTERFACES
In "Brain-Computer Interface Technology and Development," Narisa Chu
of CWLab International takes a look
at some of the remarkable developments in these technologies and as
well as the emerging applications and
uses for such technology. She reviews
and evaluates the current road maps
and looks at how new applications in
the gaming, entertainment, and rehabilitation industry segments will
develop in the near future.

CONNECTED CLOUD PRINTING
In "The Shifting Printing Paradigm,"
Hyuck Kim and KiYoung Hwang examine the convergence between the latest IT

and printing services. They consider
how new network and storage services
are enabling novel, highly scalable, and
flexible print services, leading to new
growth and innovation opportunities.
Emerging technology areas such as the
Internet of Things will reinforce these
disruptive influences, leading to a second wave of innovation. This new ecosystem presents an opportunity for new
business services and models. NFC and
BLE are among the first of these
emerging Internet of Things technologies used to improve user experience
and lead this new era of connected
printing services.

ACCESS CONTROL
THE INTERNET OF THINGS
Things are all around us, and pretty much
all of them are connected these days. Some
commentators suggest that we'll have more
than 25 billion of them by 2020-nearly an
order of magnitude of more things than
people. I don't know about you, but I'm
starting to feel a bit vulnerable with all of
these things all around me, so I was very
happy to see Phillip Windley's article "API
Access Control with OAuth."
Windley, who is affiliated with
Brigham Young University, provides a
well-thought-out evaluation of OAuth and
analyzes its suitability for this use case. He
also devotes a section of the article to the
shortcomings of OAuth and discusses
some approaches and solutions to address
these deficiencies. This is a very useful
and detailed article that can provide a useful template for improving or enhancing
current access-control approaches for the
Internet of Things and connected devices.
