or local government, or both. Regardless, this will likely result in
what is now largely an individually determined independent
form of transportation evolving into a kind of individually funded public transportation and, eventually, to a commercial or government service.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Sally A. Applin (sally@sally.com) is a doctoral candidate in
anthropology with a technology focus at the University of
Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom, working with the Centre
for Social Anthropology and Computing. Her thesis focuses on
Silicon Valley technology makers, the technology they produce, and the impact of their productions on culture. Her
research interests are on human invention and adaptation of
digital technologies; sociability in automation; the impact of
multiple, multiplexed communications on human relationships
and cooperation; how groups evolve, grow, and communicate;
brand development; ubiquitous automated services, automated
vehicles, robotics, and the Internet of Things.
Andreas Riener (andreas@soft.uni-linz.ac.at) is a professor
for human-machine interface and virtual reality at the Ingolstadt
University of Applied Sciences. His research interests are on
cyberphysical automotive systems and include the recognition of
vital bodily functions using embedded sensors, multimodal sensor-actuator systems, embedded intelligence, context-sensitive
data processing, and human factors in driver-vehicle interfaces.
Michael D. Fischer (m.d.fischer@kent.ac.uk) is a professor
of anthropological sciences at the University of Kent, United
Kingdom, as well as the director of the Centre for Social Anthropology and Computing; vice president of the Human Relations
Area Files (HRAF), Yale University; a director of HRAF
Advanced Research Centres (Kent and Yale); and Software Sustainability Institute Fellow. His research interests are the representation and structure of indigenous knowledge, cultural
informatics, invention, and the impact of mobile communications
on social networks and agency.
