Despite these many standards, most
companies that write and publish AR
authoring systems develop their own
formats and model encodings for internal use. When presented with assets
developed in a third-party system, the

developer must convert formats prior
to importing.
That said, an increasing number of
people that build AR experiences and
tools for authoring such experiences
have not found standards they wish to
implement for describing the user's
interaction with objects in the physical
world. They have the choice of developing proprietary conventions or waiting until a suitable standard emerges.

In the fall of 2013 I performed an
exhaustive analysis of IEEE standards to identify the existing standards and projects in working groups
that could have the greatest impact
on open and interoperable AR. The
specifications and projects appearing
in Table 1 are ranked in order of
their potential for impact.
Over the course of 2014, the staff of
the IEEE Standards Association
(IEEE-SA) and I contacted the editors
and leaders in these standards working
groups encouraging them to examine
use cases with AR elements. I also
established dialog with, and in some
cases have become well acquainted
with the work of, representatives
responsible for standards in the IEEE
Communications Society, IEEE Computer Society, and IEEE Power & Energy Society. Most have begun to
consider their potential to contribute,
but each group's level of interest in and
ability to work on AR-specific extensions will depend on many factors.
One committee of the IEEE Computer
Society, the Learning Technologies Steering Committee, received in 2014 a proposal for a new AR-specific working
