of the total number of journals, this will
rival Elsevier. If the projected economies of scale are realized, this new corporation will have the resources to
make significant additional investments
in both technology and new product
development activities.

Clearly, such large consolidations in
the market put increasing pressure on the
nonprofit publishers such as IEEE. However, there are many smaller consolidations ongoing in the market. Nonprofits
are only about one-third of the market,
and the big corporations represent a similar proportion-that leaves the last onethird of the market comprising many
smaller for-profits, many of which are
being gobbled up by the large corporations. Throughout 2014-2015, the rate of
market consolidation has continued to rise.

WHY CONSOLIDATIONS?
The market is under continual pressure
both from the accelerating pace of technological advances, the growth in niche
research communities, and the rapid
growth in emerging markets. All of these
factors lead to a market that is growing
more rapidly, but, in parallel, it becomes
more fractured. Technology enables
small, highly specialized, technical communities to exist, and it creates new
demands for specialized publications. At
the same time, electronic distribution
has enabled many smaller publishers to
enter the market and serve these niche
