Biography
Wen-Chung Kao earned his M.S. and
Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering
from National Taiwan University in
1992 and 1996, respectively. From 1996 to 2000, he was
a department manager at SoC Technology Center, ERSO,
ITRI, Taiwan. From 2000 to 2004, he was an assistant
vice president at NuCam Corporation in Foxlink Group,
Taiwan, where he was responsible for leading research and
development team to develop digital still/video cameras. In
2002, he was invited to form SiPix Technology Inc., Taipei,
Taiwan, where he was in charge of setting up the research
team of the company and studying flexible electrophoretic
display. Since 2004, he has been with National Taiwan
Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan, where he is currently
a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering
and the dean of the School of Continuing Education. His
current research interests include system-on-a-chip (SoC) as
well as embedded software design, flexible electrophoretic
display, machine vision systems, digital camera systems, and
color imaging science. He received the Best Paper Award
at the IEEE 2006 International Symposium on Consumer
Electronics, the IEEE 2006 Asia-Pacific Conference on Circuits
and Systems, the IEEE 2011 International Symposium on
Consumer Electronics, and ICCE 2014. He currently serves
as an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Consumer
Electronics as well as IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine.
He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Title: "Controller Design of Electronic Papers"
Abstract: Electronic paper has become the main solution
for the panels for electronic readers because of its invariably
reflective, high-contrast, and bistable properties. With different
requirements of display resolution and speed, the designers
may adopt different types of electrophoretic materials and
active matrix backplane for building the system. Thus, the
driving methods should be customized for accommodating
various application specifications under different environment
temperatures. In this talk, Dr. Kao presents the hardware
architecture of the electronic paper controller. The presented
hardware architecture has been successfully applied on the
controller of some commercial electronic readers, which can
show high-quality still images as well as playing real-time
videos on the electronic paper.
Title: "Design of ColorImage Processing Pipeline of Digital Cameras"
Abstract: Although many individual image processing
algorithms have been proposed for digital cameras, very few
papers have well addressed the design issues of the image
processing pipeline (IPP). A typical IPP contains more than
ten stages to process the raw image data captured from CCD/
CMOS sensors and produce the final color/tone reproduced
images. This talk bridges the gap between theoretical color
imaging sciences and practical IPP implementation issues. The
presented IPP design has been successfully applied on many

Biography
Sung-Jea Ko earned his Ph.D. degree
in 1988 and his M.S. degree in 1986,
both in electrical and computer engineering, from the State
University of New York at Buffalo, and his B.S. degree in
electronic engineering at Korea University in 1980. In 1992,
he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering at Korea
University, where he is currently a professor. From 1988 to
1992, he was an assistant professor of the Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of
Michigan-Dearborn. He has published 179 international
journal articles and 218 international conference proceedings.
He also holds more than 60 patents registered on video signal
processing, computer vision, and multimedia applications.
Dr. Ko is the 1999 Recipient of the LG Research Award given to
the outstanding information technology and communication
researcher. He received the Hae-Dong Best Paper Award from
the Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea (1997), the
Best Paper Award from the IEEE Asia Pacific Conference on
Circuits and Systems (1996), the Research Excellence Award
from Korea University (2004), and the Technical Achievement
Award from the IEEE Society (2012). He received a 15-year
service award from the TPC of ICCE in 2014. Dr. Ko has served
as the general chair of ITC-CSCC 2012 and the general chair
of IEICE 2013. He has been a member of the editorial board
of IEEE Transactions on Consumer Electronics since 2012.
He is a past president of the IEIE and the vice president of
international affairs of the IEEE CE Society.
Title: "Computer-Vision-Based Human-Device Interaction"
Abstract: As smart devices are becoming increasingly
common, consumers nowadays desire more convenient and
natural human-device interaction (HDI). In particular, new
perceptual interfaces based on visual input captured by
computer vision systems are drawing more attention due
to their simplicity and intuitiveness. The purpose of this
technology is to replace or complement the traditional ones,
which are based on keyboard, mouse, or remote controller.
Some of the examples of the applications include controlling
and interacting with CE or playing computer games using the
user's body gestures or eye movements. The main advantage
of using these vision-based HDI technologies is that by
solely employing visual information, it becomes possible to
communicate with devices at a certain distance, without the
need for handling controlling devices.
Title: "Image and Video Enhancement"
Abstract: Image and video enhancement has been steadily
gaining in importance with the increasing prevalence of
digital visual media. Topics such as noise, blur, and
low contrast have been explored in most areas of image
