E n t e r t a i n m e n t Te c h n o l o g i e s , a
cofounder and the CTO of SiliconMap,
and a cofounder of the Silicon Valley Trade Council. He has
participated in more than 400 projects in the semiconductor,
electronic, and software marketplaces along with operational
and advisory roles for companies in the development and
expansion phases. These projects and his personal interests
span the areas of art, film, broadcast, music, education,
data analytics, security, automotive, and medical products.
In addition to his engineering role, he is a senior editor
with M&E Tech and an editor for IEEE Consumer Electronics
Magazine. Previously, Pallab held staff editing positions with
EDN and Chip Design Magazine. He has held positions as an
officer for the IEEE Nanotechnology Council, IEEE Education
Society, and IEEE CE Society. He has also participated on
the Board of Directors of the University of California
at Berkeley Engineering Alumni Society, as a conference
organizer/advisor for many technical conferences including
ISQED, Storage Visions, Creative Storage, the International
Consumer Electronics Show, NAB, SID Displayweek, and E3.
He was recently awarded recognition as an ISQED fellow. He
earned his B.S.E.E. degree from the University of California at
Berkeley and his M.S.E.E. degree from San Jose State. Pallab
has taught at San Jose State, Santa Clara University, Silicon
Valley Technical Institute, and the California Polytechnic
Institute. He is also an author of technical books with Springer
Publications, Wyle, and Technology and Imagination Press.
Saraju P. Mohanty
Role and responsibility: special issues.
Saraju P. Mohanty (saraju.mohanty@
unt.edu) is a professor at the Department
of Computer Science and Engineering,
University of North Texas, where
he directs the NanoSystem Design
Laboratory. He earned his Ph.D. degree
in computer science and engineering from the University of
South Florida in 2003, his master's degree in systems science
and automation from the Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore, in 1999, and his bachelor's degree (honors) in

electrical engineering from Orissa University of Agriculture and
Technology, Bhubaneswar, India, in 1995. His research is in lowpower, high-performance nanoelectronic systems and hardwareassisted information security and has been funded by the U.S.
National Science Foundation and the Semiconductor Research
Corporation. Saraju holds four U.S. patents, which have wide
applications in digital watermarking, real-time digital rights
management, and mixed-signal integrated circuit design. He is
an author of 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, 120 peer-reviewed
conference publications, and three books. The publications have
been well received by his peers, with a total of 2,200 citations
leading to an H-index of 24 and an i10-index of 58 (from Google
Scholar). His latest best-selling textbook Nanoelectronic MixedSignal System Design was published by McGraw-Hill in 2015. He
is a senior member of ACM and currently serves as the chair of
the Technical Committee on Very Large Scale Integration, IEEE
Computer Society (CS). He serves on the editorial board of several
international journals, such as IET Circuits, Devices & Systems
Journal, Elsevier Integration Journal, and Journal of Low Power
Electronics. He has served as a guest editor for many prestigious
journals, including ACM Journal on Emerging Technologies in
Computing Systems (issue titled "New Circuit and Architecture
Level Solutions for Multidiscipline Systems," August 2012) and IET
Circuits, Devices & Systems (the issue, "Design Methodologies for
Nanoelectronic Digital and Analog Circuits," September 2013).
Saraju serves on the organizing and program committees of
several international conferences. He was a general chair for the
IEEE CS Symposium on VLSI in 2012 and 2014. More information is
available at his website: http://www.cse.unt.edu/~smohanty. He is a
Senior Member of the IEEE.
Bob Frankston
Role and responsibility: columnist, "Bits
Versus Electrons."
Bob Frankston (bob19-0501@bobf.
frankston.com) grew up in Brooklyn,
New York, where he learned firsthand
about CE by helping his father, who
manufactured audio systems and other CE products. He
learned to program in 1963, and by his senior year in high
school, in 1966, he was helping to develop one of the very first
online financial information services. What made the system
unusual was that it gave ordinary users the ability to create
their own queries and tap into the power of computing long
before personal computers became available. As a student
at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Bob worked on
the multics project (which led to Unix and set the stage for
much of modern computing). He worked alongside those
developing what later became the Internet. He cofounded an
organization to give students access to computing facilities
for their own projects and did his 1974 master's thesis on
information utility (what would be called cloud computing
today). Working with Dan Bricklin in 1979, Bob implemented
VisiCalc, the first electronic spreadsheet. VisiCalc gave many
people their first taste of personal computing and helped to
set the stage for the growth of personal computing. His career
has been devoted to empowering people to take advantage
of computing and connectivity. While working at Microsoft,
