research interests include computer graphics, animation, image
and video coding, and lossless multimedia data compression. He
has received five ISO/IEC Certificates of Appreciation for his
contribution to various MPEG standard developments. Euee
received the Presidential Award for contribution to MPEG
standardization from the Korean Government in 2005.
Sally A. Applin
Role and responsibility: societal impacts
of CE.
Sally A. Applin (sally@sally.com) is
a doctoral candidate at the University
of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom,
in the School of Anthropology and
Conservation, working with the Centre for Social Anthropology
and Computing. Her dissertation focuses on the impact of
technology on culture, Silicon Valley technology makers, the
technology they produce, and the impact of their productions
on society, including how new technology manifests. Sally's
research interests are human invention and adaptation of

digital technologies and how these are integrated into society
at large articulated through social networks and technologically
mediated channels such as ubiquitous automated services,
products and experiences, including robotics, autonomous
vehicles, the IoT, and smart systems and processes. As a graduate
student, Sally published six IEEE publications and participated
in many academic and industry conferences such as Augmented
World Expo, SXSW, and O'Reilly SOLID. Sally's talks cover a range
of technology and CE topics, such as "Achieving Successful
Outcomes from Science Fiction Inspired Technologies," "Forced
Compliance: How the City Shapes the Network that Shapes the
City," "Thing Theory: Making Sense of IoT Complexity," and
"Everybody Is Talking to Each Other without Talking to Each
Other: PolySocial Reality and Asynchronous Adaptation." She
earned her B.A. degree in conceptual design/fine art from SFSU
and her a master's degree from New York University's Interactive
Telecommunications program. She has more than 20 years of
experience in Silicon Valley as a senior researcher and user
experience designer. Sally joins us as an associate editor working
with Senior Editor Katina Michael in the technology and society
"Impacts" section of IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine.
