Twelve Society representatives
worked together enthusiastically. The
chair of the RFID Conferences, Matthew Reynolds, University of Washington; and the chair of RFID-TA
Conferences, Greg Durgin, Georgia
Tech, heavily contributed to setting the
cornerstones for high-quality technical
presentations and many student activities including poster sessions and prototype competitions. Student programs
were vibrant in this conference, coordinated by the enthusiastic professors
Stewart Thomas of Duke University
and Marcin Morys of Georgia Tech.

9th RFID ConFeRenCe In 2015
This year's RFID Conference held its 9th
conference in San Diego, following the
convention to colocate with RFID Journal Live 2015. The quality of the technical presentations was impressive, with a
33% submission acceptance rate and
eight technical tracks. Keynote speakers
were delivered by an insightful industry
entrepreneur, Fred Tubb of iControl, and
an academic genius, Professor Dina
Katabi from MIT. Tubb's discussion:
"Disrupting Global Logistics," elaborated on the security aspect of RFID in
transportation and homeland security
applications. Prof. Katabi's topic: "RFID
as a Key Enabler of the Internet of Things:
Localization and Communication,"
described the future, where a viewing
screen can be the ambient air, with no
more concerns about the various form

factors ranging from the smartphone, tablet, or PC to TV.
The Best Paper award was given to
Alexander Vardy (UCSD) and Hessam
Mahdavifar (Samsung) on "Coding for
Tag Collision Recovery."

13th RFID JouRnal lIve In 2015
Next to the IEEE RFID Conference
was the grandiose Exposition of the
13th RFID Journal Live 2015, run by
its president, Mark Roberti. Applications were abound with Zebra Technologies being the most visible exhibitor.
uGrokit, one of the entrepreneurial
finalists awarded by RFID Journal,
demonstrated an attractive baby mobile
of alphabets, each card embedded with
a RFID tag. uGrokit displayed the performance of its system in terms of distance resolution of inventory scanning.

A new publicity and communication
project was adopted based on the proposal from Conference Catalyst, a
company familiar to many IEEE Societies in building social media publicity.
They will be chartered to use social
media tools including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Chinese Wiebo and
WeChat for CRFID's conference and
membership promotions.
The RFID 2016 (10th) Conference proposal in Orlando, Florida, was approved.
Prof. Matt Reynold, University of
Washington, will continue to be the
conference chairman.

The RFID-TA 2016 Conference proposal, to be held in Shunde, Guangzhou, China, was approved. The
conference will take place at the joint
Research Institute of San Yat-sen University and Carnegie Mellon University during the third week of September
2016. Prof. Hong-Zhou Tan will
spearhead this conference.

MovIng FoRwaRD
The approach led by Emily Sopensky and
former chairs during the formation of
CRFID appears to be effective for linking
up new areas of RFID technology expansion and tapping into various Societies'
strengths to grow system integration and
drive future innovations in CE. The
CRFID presents a rich resource to garner
synergy and to expand the CE Society's
hardware-oriented applications.
RFID is also viewed as an IoT
enabler and the two technologies share
many commonalities in collaborated
development. RFID is small in its physical size, although it has gained tremendous popularity in industry in the last ten
years. The future of RFID must expand
from simply chip-centric manufacturing
to system and software development and
integration. RFID companies have
changed dynamically, some failed and
vanished and others have realized their
business expansion plan based on the
IoT-a new horizon.

Cities" during CES Asia.
