We are not done yet. We have a growing number of regular columns covering various aspects of CE technology
and its impacts. As always, we provide
a rich collection of insights, analyses,
and opinions from our regular contributors. I do hope you enjoy them.

PUBLICATIONS ROUND-UP
CE Society veteran and VP of Publications
Stu Lipoff writes about the various publications that are supported by your Society
and how members can benefit from the
reduced rate of subscriptions to these journals. He features the IEEE Transactions
on Haptics and the IEEE Biometrics Compendium and reminds our members about
the regular eZine, CESoc World that
updates our membership on CE-related
events and conferences. Thanks Stu!

SOAPBOx IS BACK
We have not had a "Soapbox" in a long
time, but I finally have someone with
something worth saying out loud, and I
am very pleased to welcome back a
long-time contributor to the magazine,
Kyle Wiens. Kyle has a nice, simple
message for his article-he wants all citizens (netizens?) to have the "right to
repair" their electronic devices. In
today's throw-away society where most
of us are already longing for the next
smartphone upgrade or the next super
"wearable" gadget, Kyle speaks a message of sustainability before profitability.
We all live on a small planet and
there is only so much raw materials to
go around, so let's help it go that bit further by guaranteeing people a "right to
repair." Manufacturers should take a
positive stance and help consumers and
third-party repair shops to fix their products once they are out of warranty. This
is in everyone's interest, and facilitating
it by providing useful technical documentation, repair procedures, and parts
numbers can help develop better consumer confidence and a positive image
for manufacturers in the CE sector.

IP CORNER
I take a break from IP Corner and hand the
reins to Susanne Wende who writes about

"The CE Marking as a Passport to the
European Market." This article explains
the significance of the CE mark, which is
adopted throughout the European Union
and is an essential certification required by
manufacturers of consumer products.

BITS VERSUS ELECTRONS
Bob Frankston writes this issue in his
"Bits Versus Electrons" column that
"The Internet Is About Relationships."
I enjoy Bob's articles a lot, and they
make me think about existing tech in
new ways. As a general comment, all of
our columnists welcome feedback and
commentary on their writing, so please
feel free to contact them, or myself, if
you have comments or wish to contribute your own viewpoint.

THE ART OF STORAGE
Tom Coughlin writes "You Can Take It
with You!"-which discusses the growth
both in the number and capacity of
external hard drives used by consumers
as more and more of our personal lives
are converted into digital media and
content. (Your editor already went
through his "multi-drive" phase and now
sports a large cloud reservoir of storage
so he does not even have to take it with
him-as long as there is a good network
connection!) Tom is our storage guru
and there is not much to know about
data storage that he does not know.
Thanks for all your contributions Tom!

STANDARDS
In this issue, our new Associate Editor for
Standards Yu Yuan discusses "Proactively
Engaging Industry Through Standards
Activities" in this month's main standards
column. He also introduces an article
from Christine Perry on standards for
"Open and Interoperable Augmented
Reality." There is plenty to keep standards
aficionados happy this issue.

MARKET-BASED ANALYSES
In "Market-Based Values," David Grier
takes a look at the role of the flashlight
in the history of CE. This leads us
through the formation of "Underwriters
Laboratories" and the difference
between telephones and flashlights, in
terms of products and markets, that is.

CEA INSIGHTS
In "CEA Insights" Mike Bergman
writes about "Quality 2.0-A New
Threat, a Bigger Challenge." Strangely
enough, in today's era of networked CE
products, this echoes our feature articles
on the IoT-because the core of "Quality 2.0" is essentially the security-hardening of today's CE products. It is an
interesting read and it's surprising how
at least three of this issue's articles have
network security as a key concern. Perhaps we need a new section of the magazine for cyber-security matters? If there
is anyone out there interested in running
such a section, please e-mail me at
dr.peter.corcoran@ieee.org.

PRODUCT REVIEWS
Long-time contributor and Senior Editor
William Lumpkins presents an article on
"Home Automation: Insteon (X10
Meets Powerline)" explaining how to
automate your home to get those pesky
lights to go on and off when you want
them to, and it is all in the palm of your
hand with the iPhone. This is the realworld IoT as we know it today, coming
to a home near you-in fact maybe even
your home. It's engineering for those
who prefer to be "practitioners" rather
than just "talkers." Thanks Will!

OF CARS AND WATCH(ING YOU!)
In "Extending Driver-Vehicle Interface
Research into the Mobile Device Commons," Sally Applin, Andreas Riener,
and Michael D. Fischer consider the
integration of user interfaces and information exchange between vehicles and
mobile devices. Today when you sit into
an automobile it links with your smartphone and they interact on many levels;
this new relationship between our
increasingly "smart" and "connected"
vehicles and our increasingly "personalized" mobile devices raises new security
and privacy concerns. How this developing relationship will evolve is yet to be
decided, but this article provides an
excellent starting point for future
researchers working in this area.
In "Detecting Driver Drowsiness,"
Mario Chacon-Murguia and Claudia
