Standardization bodies such as MPEG to recently launch a
new standardization effort for HDR. Although HEVC, the latest compression standard, supports compression of HDR content, it became evident that efficiency may be improved if the
characteristics of HDR are taken into consideration. Given
this, MPEG initiated a standardization effort to enhance the
coding performance of the HEVC Main 10 profile for HDR/
WCG video.
During this HDR transition phase and in the absence of
any true HDR displays, broadcasting tone-mapped HDR content may be a solution.
The lack of HDR content at this time may be resolved
through inverse tone mapping or remastering of the existing
content. If the physical values of the content itself are retrievable, then inverse tone mapping would be able to lead to better visual quality.
Advancements in HDR technology pave the way for exciting market opportunities where such exponential increases in
detail-rich imaging being available could be of great value.
From entertainment and education to medicine and training,
this technology is bound to change the game in the digital
media market.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Ronan Boitard (rboitard.w@gmail.com) earned his M.Eng.
degree in electrical engineering from the Institut National des
Sciences Appliquées in 2009. He then was an engineer in a
national French research lab, Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (INRIA), where he worked on
the standardization process of the new high-efficiency video
codec standard. In 2011, he began pursuing his Ph.D. degree
with technicolor and Institut de Recherche en Informatique et
Systèmes Aléatoires (IRISA) on high-dynamic-range

technology, more specifically, on video tone mapping and
temporal coherency. After completing his Ph.D. degree in
2014, he joined the University of British Columbia as a postdoc, where he is still working.
Mahsa T. Pourazad (mahsa.talebpourazad@telus.com)
earned her B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from Iran
University of Science and Technology in 2000, her M.Sc.
degree in electrical and computer engineering from the
University of Manitoba in 2004, and her Ph.D. degree in
electrical and computer engineering from the University of
British Columbia (UBC) in 2010. She is currently a senior
engineer at the Chief Technology Office, TELUS Communications Inc., and a system consultant at the UBC Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems
(ICICS). She has been an active Member of the IEEE, the
Standard Council of Canada, and Moving Picture Experts
Group (MPEG).
Panos Nasiopoulos (panos@ece.ubc.ca) earned his B.S.
degree in physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1980 and his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in
electrical and computer engineering from the University of
British Columbia (UBC), Canada, in 1985, 1988, and 1994,
respectively. He is a professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the former Director of
ICICS and the Master of Software Systems at UBC. Before
joining UBC, he was president of Daikin Comtec U.S. and
executive vice president of Sonic Solutions. He is a registered
professional engineer in British Columbia, a fellow of the
Canadian Academy of Engineering, and has been an active
member of the Standards Council of Canada, Moving Picture
Experts Group (MPEG), Application for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the IEEE.
Jim Slevinsky (jim.slevinsky@telus.com) earned his B.S.
degree in electrical engineering and his M.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering, both at the University of Alberta.
His master's research was centered on the synthesis of survivable optical networks. He is currently the director of technology
strategy at the Chief Technology Office at TELUS, where he
leads a team of senior technology consultants tasked with determining emerging technology and service opportunities.
