silicon systems for the Internet of
Things (IoT), IoT applications for inventory tracking, and from RFID to Cloud
applications. In these presentations and
Q&A sessions, many interesting subjects were brought out for discussions,
such as network security, privacy, sensor
design and selection, and noninvasive
life-sign detection using Wi-Fi. From
my communications with our members
and student members of MIT, these
types of events nourish the engineering
community with new technology statuses and trends and provide an excellent
platform peers and young professionals
to network and incubate new ideas. The
CE Society will continuously support
more of these local and regional events
in the coming months.
Also in May, we held our first ICCEAsia workshop (in preparation for next
year's official launch of ICCE-Asia) in
Shanghai, China, in conjunction with
the first CES Asia. The workshop's
theme was "Applied Intelligence for
Smart Living and Smart Cities." This
two-day program included keynote
addresses, panel discussions, presentations, and demonstrations. Presentations
on smart living and smart cities covered
various angles including emerging technology trends, standardization, ecosystems, and social impacts. Some
wearable technologies, smart home,
advanced battery technology, eHealth,
IoT, and other leading-edge topics were
also discussed. This workshop set a
good tone for the preparation of next
year's conference. Before and after the

conference, some of conference organizers visited several IoT, eHealth, and sensors development bases within the
Yangzi and Shanghai area. These visits
provided a good foundation to further
strengthen and develop the technology
network in the region and gain local
government support for the CE Society's
future activities. Some of the institutes
and technology agencies have expressed
a strong interest in working and collaborating with the CE Society for advanced
technology development.
June was a busy month; we not only
had our biannual Board of Governors
meeting in Madrid, but also held a very
successful ICCE-Taiwan. This is the
second year of the conference in Taiwan, but we already had accumulated
376 paper submissions, 261 accepted
papers, four keynote speeches, three
poster sessions, and 39 regular sessions.
With this scale, it has become one of the
major conferences in the CE Society.
The conference provided participants a
good technical banquet and a very welcoming culture-oriented atmosphere.
Congratulations to our organizing committee on a job well done!
I am also pleased to report that we
have made good progress on standardization activities. Our Standards Committee
worked very hard and proposed three
project authorization requests (PARs) for
submission to the IEEE Standard Association. Most of these PARs cover new CE
technology topics. I encourage our Society members to be more active in bringing new standards proposals.

As part of the Future Directions initiative, the CE Society has been chosen
by the IEEE Technical Activity Board as
the home Society for the Digital Senses
Initiative for IEEE. The Steering Committee has been set up and geared to
promote a sequence of technical activities in this field. Stay tuned for upcoming workshops and activities.
In addition, I would like to bring your
attention again to IEEE CE Soc TV,
which contains a vast amount of information about Society conferences and workshops and is managed and updated
regularly by our Society TV crew. I am
proud to say that our professional TV
crew goes to our key Society activities
and has recorded countless valuable presentations and events to share with our

In summary, there are still a lot for us
to do and improve. But overall, our
Society is moving in a good direction
with a steady pace. We are experiencing
a healthy growth with more quality conferences, initiatives, and activities. We
will focus on improving the strategic
plan and revisit our fields of interest in
the coming months. We will also look to
bring more quality papers and presentations to our conferences and partner
with regional leadership to bring beneficial member activities to you.

Prieto-Resendiz present a detailed and
comprehensive survey related to driver
drowsiness fatigue detection (DFD) systems. This article covers academic, governmental, and corporate efforts in this
field and presents a conceptual map for
DFD systems design and a survey of the
following three aspects of published
DFD works: 1) the organizations that

study the problem, focusing on the key
players-universities, companies, and
government agencies; 2) the psychophysiological features that characterize
DFD; and 3) the methods used to measure the DFD features.
Finally, we have an article from Katina and M.G. Michael on the "Apple
Watch Temptation" to which many of us

have undoubtedly succumbed. How will
this new item of wearable technology
succeed, and where will it stop? Can new
wearable technology really add value to
our lives, or are we entering a new age of
personal monitoring and uberveilance?
