Consumer Electronics Magazine Editor-In-Chief
THE OPPORTUNITY
The IEEE Consumer Electronics (CE) Society is seeking a new editor-in-chief (EiC) to take on the role of
managing IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine.
The prospective candidate should have:
■ editorial experience at a senior level
■ links with or direct experience of working in the CE Industry, ideally at senior level
■ an established personal publication record or equivalent experience (e.g., standards or intellectual property).
THE PERSON
In addition, the editor-in-chief should bring a broad perspective to the role. The CE industry encompasses
a broad range of technologies and has a record of rapidly driving technology adoption and
commercialization-e.g., the smartphone and tablet industries. The EiC should be comfortable tackling
new emerging sectors including consumer drones, driverless vehicles, and the "Internet of Things," as well
as the broader societal and economic impacts of CE products and services including cybersecurity,
privacy, and the environmental and energy impacts of the CE sector. He or she should also bring
integrated IEEE thinking into the role, and thus membership of more than one IEEE Society is desirable.
THE PUBLICATION
Established in 2011 and derived from the CE Society newsletter, IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine is
distributed to all members of IEEE CE Society, as well as to members of several other IEEE Societies
including the IEEE Reliability Society, the IEEE Product Safety Society, and the IEEE Society for Social
Implications of Technology (SSIT). The magazine has won several major publications prizes including an
Apex Grand Prize in 2013.
A new Editorial Board is in place to support the EiC and includes four established senior editors and eight
regular columnists, and each issue is produced by an IEEE Publications team led by Managing Editor
Craig Causer. A full production support budget is approved by the IEEE CE Society, currently running at
an approximately 550-page annual budget.
THE CHALLENGES
The new EiC will to manage and operate a publication that is published quarterly. The magazine currently
has eight regular established columns that provide approximately 25% of the content, and an additional
four to six core feature articles are required for each issue. The IEEE SSIT Society contributes two to four
"Impacts" articles for each issue. In addition, the magazine has some articles such as its "Soapbox"
column and "Champions of CE" feature article slots that provide strong focal articles for alternate issues.
There is also a substantial CE "Society News" and "Conference Reports" columns that contain articles
about Society conferences, local Chapters, workshops, and other Society-related events, typically
providing another 20% of the issue content.
FUTURE ROADMAP
In addition to the general challenges of managing and operating the magazine, the current EiC has laid out a roadmap with several
key goals for IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine: 1) the magazine should strive to become the principle IEEE-wide publication for
CE content; 2) in parallel, it should seek to grow to six issues (approximately 800 pages) per year; 3) it should engage and establish a
strategic partnership (similar to the ongoing partnership with the IEEE SSIT Society) with at least one of the larger Societies-IEEE
Computer Society, IEEE Signal Processing Society, and/or IEEE Communications Society.
This is an exciting opportunity for the right person. IEEE Consumer Electronics Magazine has already grown from a Society newsletter to a
point where it provides as much value as publications from other major Societies. The CE Society Board is very supportive of additional
growth and engagement across IEEE, and the current EiC is willing to support and mentor the incoming candidate through a transition period.
