Paradox
The promise and peril of uncensored live video.

t started with the insides of people's
refrigerators: beer cans and mustard, kale
and kombucha, glass jars of baby food.
Early adopters of live video streaming
apps, such as Meerkat and Periscope,
clamored to share the contents of their
fridges with curious strangers around the
world. When the apps launched, people
weren't quite sure what to do with them, so
they turned them on, pressed record, and
started live streaming whatever was in
front of them at the moment. Creative users
began by live streaming meetings and mundane tasks, but soon, the Internet became
enthralled with the voyeuristic hashtags
#fridgeview and #showusyourfridge [1]-
arguably live video's first viral sensations.
They say, "you are what you eat," and sure
enough, empty or full, our fridges-and
their contents-proved to be charmingly
character defining and compelling.
But then, riots broke out in Baltimore,
and 25-year-old Freddie Gray died in police
custody. As people took to the streets to
demand justice, Periscope gave the rest of
the world a glimpse into the protests. Instead
of television news crews covering the events
from the outside, as observers, the people
inside the marches were telling their own
story and framing their own images: of their
communities and their struggles. For supporters who were unable to attend in person,
the live feed became a way of staying connected, in real time. The effect was unprecedented. What was being presented as riots by
the mainstream media was shown as protests
