IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine - December 2014 - 93
sessions, encompassing existing and past lidar space-based
missions such as CALIPSO, and ICESat. Future missions
currently in development were also presented. These were:
NASA's GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation)
lidar being developed for installation on the International
Space Station (ISS) by 2018 which will provide a unique 3-D
view of Earth's forests, providing clues to the Earth's Global
Carbon Cycle; JAXA's Vegetation Lidar (MOLI) for global 3D
vegetation mapping also being planned for implementation
on the ISS; the French/German Climate Mission, MERLIN
(Methane Remote Sensing Lidar Mission) to be launched in
2017, providing improved data on global methane concentration and enabling better understanding of global climate
change and prediction; ESA's ADM/AEOLUS for global wind
vector measurements enabling vastly improved weather prediction and ESA/JAXA EarthCare mission for high spectral
resolution measurement of clouds/aerosols.
The fourth day of the workshop was held at CNES Headquarters. After a welcome and overview of CNES programs
by Mioara Mandea, the last two sessions of the workshop
on emerging lidar technologies, and space-lidar reliability
were conducted.
The final day of the workshop was held at UPMC. Participants spent a full day at technical breakout sessions
of their choosing and further discussed the technology
requirements as related to scientific needs and societal ben-
efits for enabling key Earth parameter measurements. They
also discussed avenues for increased international collaboration on future missions. The workshop was concluded
by individual reports from each session and discussion of
plans for synthesizing the final workshop report, which
will be published in early 2015.
Overall, this first workshop of its kind created an exceptional opportunity where scientists and technologists as
well as policy makers from different countries, government agencies, industries and universities were able to meet
together and discuss important issues related to current and
planned space lidar missions and technologies in a holistic
approach, integrating science, technology, engineering and
policy aspects. Some conclusions highlighted the current
R&D activities at several space agencies, and confirmed the
need for leveraging and a stronger partnership across agencies and other organization for continued success. These
collaborative activities will be strengthened by setting up
international working groups in appropriate topical areas
(including science, technology, data, and program formulation) and will significantly enhance planning activities
at the space agencies, and foster increased collaboration.
The participants agreed that a follow-on workshop of this
nature would be most beneficial in order to continue the
dialogue and facilitate future collaborations. As such, plans
are underway to hold the second workshop in two years.

March 24-27, 2014
T
he 13th Specialist Meeting on Microwave Radiometry
and Remote Sensing Applications (MicroRad 2014)
was held in Pasadena CA on March 24-27 at the California
Institute of Technology (Cal Tech). The meeting attracted
137 attendees of which 70% were from North America,
25% from Europe and 5% from Asia, South America and
Oceania. This year's MicroRad continued the tradition of
those held before it and featured an extensive technical
and social program. The final technical program consisted of 82 oral and 68 poster presentations. The social
program consisted an opening reception, banquet and
tour of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
