originality, clarity and timeliness of the paper. IEEE membership is preferable. The Award consists of a Certificate
and an honorarium of $1,500. If the paper has more than
one author, the honorarium shall be shared.
The 2015 J-STARS Prize Paper Award is presented to
Salvatore Stramondo, Paola Vannoli, Valentina Cannelli,
Marco Polcari, Daniele Melini, Sergey Samsonov, Marco
Moro, Christian Bignami, and Michele Saroli with the
citation: "For a very significant contribution to the field of
endeavor of the IEEE GRS Society in the paper co-authored
by Salvatore Stramondo, Paola Vannoli, Valentina Cannelli,
Marco Polcari, Daniele Melini, Sergey Samsonov, Marco Moro,
Christian Bignami, and Michele Saroli entitled "X- and C-Band
SAR Surface Displacement for the 2013 Lunigiana Earthquake
(Northern Italy): A Breached Relay Ramp?," published in the
IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations
and Remote Sensing, vol. 7 , no. 7, pp. 2746-2753, July 2014."
Salvatore Stramondo (M'05-SM'14) received the laurea
(M.S.) degree in electronic engineering in 1996 from the
University "La Sapienza", Rome, Italy, and the Ph.D. in
Geoinformation in 2007 from the University "Tor Vergata",
Rome, Italy. He joined the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e
Vulcanologia (INGV) in 1997 where he is currently Head
of Satellite Earth Observation Data unit. In 2003-2010
has been Adjunct Professor of "Remote Sensing" and "Cartography and Topography" at the University of Calabria,
Rende, Italy. He was Invited Researcher at the CNR-IRECE
(Neaples, Italy, 1997), IPGP (Paris, France, 1998), JPL (Pasadena, CA, 2000), IIT (Bombay, India, 2001). His main
research activities are in SAR interferometry techniques
and geophysical applications. He is author of more than 50
international papers and contributions to books. In 2014
he has been Editor of the Remote Sensing chapter of the
Encyclopedia of Earthquake Engineering, Springer. He
is actually coordinator of the APhoRISM FP7 project. Dr.
Stramondo has been Chairman and Co-Chairman at sev44

eral international conferences. Since 2009 Dr. Stramondo is
Editor of Remote Sensing journal, International Journal of
Applied Earth Observation and Geoinformation and Associate Editor of IEEE GRS Letters.
Paola Vannoli received her degree in Geological Sciences from Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza",
Italy, in 1994, and her Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the
same university in 2000. She joined the Istituto Nazionale
di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) in 2001 where she is
currently Researcher. Her main research activities cover
active tectonics and tectonic geomorphology. Since 2001
she has been working on identification and characterization of seismogenic sources using geological, seismological,
and historical data. Her research interests encompass the
study of potential sources of damaging earthquakes, and
the analysis of the effects induced by the tectonic activity on
the landscape. She is member of the DISS Working Group
(Database of Individual Seismogenic Sources; http://diss.
rm.ingv.it/diss/), and the Emergeo Working Group (emergency field survey of surface earthquake effects; http://
emergeo.ingv.it/). She is member of the INGV team that
carries out national seismic monitoring, and is involved in
Italian and international projects related to seismic hazard
(http://www.roma1.ingv.it/Members/vannoli).
Valentina Cannelli was born on September 20, 1974 in
Roma. She obtained her Degree in Physics in 2000 at University of Roma Tre. She had a three-year research grant at
National Institute of Occupational Safety and Prevention
(ISPESL) - Occupational Hygiene Department - Ionizing and
Non-Ionizing Radiations Laboratory of the Research Center
in Monteporzio Catone from December, 2002 to October,
31 2005. She is a researcher at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica
e Vulcanologia (INGV), Seismology and Tectonophysics
Department, since November 1, 2005. Her main research
interests include: Study of kinematics and source geometries
of giant earthquakes through linear and nonlinear joint
