IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters since 2008. He was
also a guest coeditor of the September 2015 special issue of
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine. He served as
chair of the GRSS Image Analysis and Data Fusion Technical Committee from 2013 to 2015 and has been its cochair
since then. He received the Best Paper Award at the 2010 IEEE
Workshop on Hyperspectral Image and Signal Processing.
Moser is a Senior Member of the IEEE
Sebastiano Serpico [Figure 11(d)] received his laurea (M.S.
equivalent) degree in electronic engineering and his Ph.D.
degree in telecommunications from the University of Genoa.
As a full professor of telecommunications at the Polytechnic
School of the University of Genoa, he is head of the Research
Group on Signal Processing and Recognition Methods and
Systems in the University of Genoa's Department of Electri-

cal, Electronic, Telecommunications Engineering, and Naval
Architecture. His current research interests include pattern
recognition for remote-sensing images and biomedical images. He is chair of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Information and Communication Technologies and has been
project manager for numerous research programs and an
evaluator of project proposals for various divisions of the
European Union, Italian Space Agency, and Italian Ministry
of Education and Research, among others. He is the author
(or coauthor) of over 200 scientific papers published in journals and conference proceedings. He received the Best Paper
Award at the 2010 IEEE Workshop on Hyperspectral Image
and Signal Processing. He is an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing and was a guest editor for two special issues (July 2001 and March 2005), as well
as a special issue of Proceedings of the IEEE (October 2012).
He was the cochair of IGARSS in 2015, Milan, Italy. Serpico is
a Fellow of the IEEE.
Michael L. Benson (Figure 13) received his B.S. degree in
electrical engineering from Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, in 2007 and his M.S. degree in electrical
engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in
2010. Currently, he is a Ph.D. candidate in the University of
Michigan's Radiation Laboratory, studying under the guidance of Leland Pierce and Kamal Sarabandi. His research
interests include sensor fusion, the development of physical
models, and leveraging computer technology to enhance our
understanding of the physical universe.
Leland Pierce (Figure 13) received his B.S. degree in
both electrical and aerospace engineering and his M.S. and
Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering, all from the University of Michigan in 1983, 1986, and 1991, respectively.
Currently, he is head of the Microwave Image Processing
Facility within the Radiation Laboratory, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, University
of Michigan, where he is responsible for research into the
uses of polarimetric SAR systems for remote-sensing applications, especially forest canopy parameter inversion.
He has published more than 25 papers in refereed journals
on SAR image processing and calibration, random media
modeling, wave propagation, and interferometric SAR and
has also delivered more than 75 papers and invited presentations at many national and international conferences
and symposia. He is president of the local Chapter of the
GRSS, past assistant to the chair of the GRSS Awards Committee, and currently an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing. Pierce is a Senior
Member of the IEEE.
Kamal Sarabandi (Figure 13) received his B.S. degree in
electrical engineering from the Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 1980 and M.S. degrees in electrical
engineering and mathematics and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering, the latter from the University of Michigan
in 1986 and 1989, respectively. He is currently director of
the Radiation Laboratory and Rufus S. Teesdale Endowed
Professor of Engineering in the Department of Electrical-
IEEE GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING MAGAZINE
