atmosphere of Yokohama (Figure 6). Fortunately, we heard
many positive comments, such as "very convenient," "very
easy to find a lunch restaurant, not anxious about a long
walk along sunbaked streets," and "very enjoyable parallelism of the clean business buildings and the human local
pub Noge area." Please come back to Yokohama to enjoy the
Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and also the World Exposition
Osaka 2025!

PUBLICITY AND PUBLICATION
PUBLICITY AND OVERSEAS LIAISON
We printed 3,000 calls for papers (CFPs) for LOC members'
distribution at related international conferences and meetings in the three years before IGARSS 2019. We also sent
electronic CFPs and other notifications via official mailing
lists and websites to solicit thousands of submissions and
invite attendees. In addition, during IGARSS, the GRSS sent
daily mail magazines to encourage attendees and remind
them of various events.
We opened a visa support service three months prior to
the symposium and received approximately 1,000 requests
from overseas attendees. The committee also responded to
multiple requests concerning child day care services, barrier-free facilities, and other daily support functions.

SOCIAL NETWORKING SERVICE AND PHOTOS
The LOC social media team collaborated with GRSS Social Networking Service (SNS) Ambassadors to start a
Twitter account for IGARSS in early June 2019. The purpose of the SNS was to provide information to participants and convey the atmosphere of the meeting. We also,
for the first time, conducted the photo contest on Twitter,
as shown in Figure 7, and three of the 237 followers won
prizes. The Twitter page was passed on to the local committee members of the next IGARSS. The LOC took more
than 2,000 official photos of IGARSS to share, some of
which are available on the IGARSS 2019 website (https://
igarss2019.org/Photos/).

PUBLICATION
To make IGARSS 2019 ecofriendly, we did not publish
hardcopy program booklets, in accordance with our
zero-waste polic y. Instead, we provided participants
with a downloadable digital program booklet from
the IGARSS website. The summary of the program was
printed on an A2-size Miura-ori sheet that could be folded into the size of a name card very quickly in a single
action (Figure 8). This was well received by participants
because of its convenience for checking session names
and rooms.

OPENING CEREMONY
IGARSS 2019 was attended by Their
Majesties the Emperor and Empress
during the opening ceremony on
29 July 2019 (Figure 9). The participants received a congratulatory address from His Majesty the Emperor,
who said,
To develop effective measures
for the preservation of the global environment, it is indispensable for us to have detailed and
accurate data and their analyses.
