IGARSS 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Preserving Our Heritage, Enabling Our Future Through Remote Sensing
T
he 42nd Annual IEEE International Geoscience and
Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) was successfully
held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 17 to 22 July
2022. This was the first hybrid IGARSS ever to be organized
and the first IGARSS in Kuala Lumpur. IGARSS
2022 was cohosted by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote
Sensing Society (GRSS) Malaysia Chapter and Universiti
Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Malaysia opened its borders to international travelers
on 1 April 2022, just four months before the symposium.
Kuala Lumpur was excited to welcome international
visitors once again after the COVID-19 pandemic.
The venue chosen for this symposium was the Kuala
Lumpur Convention Center, located right in the heart of
the country's capital city and part of the integrated Kuala
Lumpur City Center (KLCC) precinct. The convention
center is easily accessible and ideal for large gatherings,
with a multilevel facility featuring a wide range of multipurpose
function spaces. The KLCC is near the Petronas
Twin Towers, the tallest twin buildings in the world
and a symbol of Malaysia's development. IGARSS 2022
began with a series of tutorial sessions on 17 July. There
were six full-day tutorials and eight half-day tutorials
on offer, with 193 participants signing up for them. The
tutorials were conducted in a hybrid format with both
in-person and virtual participants.
IGARSS 2022 was officiated by Malaysian Minister
of Science, Technology, and Innovation Dato' Sri Dr.
Adham bin Baba on the morning of 18 July (Figure 1).
Prior to that, several plenary talks were organized. Dr.
Maurice Borgeaud (European Space Agency), Dr. Karen
M. St. Germain (NASA), Dr. Jian Zhao (China National
Space Administration), and Rebecca Moore (Google
Earth) gave speeches on the advancements of remote
sensing in today's world.

IGARSS 2022 THEME
IGARSS is the flagship symposium of the GRSS. IGARSS
aims to bring together researchers, academia, and industry
in sharing knowledge and experience on recent
developments and advancements in geoscience and remote
sensing technologies. This year's theme was " Preserving
Our Heritage, Enabling Our Future Through
Remote Sensing. " The IGARSS 2022 technical program
included the following general themes:
◗ data analysis methods (optical, multispectral, hyperspectral,
and synthetic aperture radar)
◗ the cryosphere
◗ data management and education
◗ land applications
◗ atmosphere applications
◗ the ocean
◗ missions, sensors, and calibration.
In addition to the general theme, four special themes
were added, as follows:
◗ unmanned aerial vehicle and drone-based remote
sensing
◗ remote sensing and disease control
