meetings, the additional online meetings helped facilitate
resolution of important items related to conferences and
publications. Figure 1 shows the November AdCom meeting
attendees at Redondo Beach, CA, USA.
An important item at the November AdCom was the
AN IMPORTANT ITEM AT
THE NOVEMBER ADCOM
WAS THE SOCIETY
ELECTIONS.
Society elections. This year, I would like to congratulate
Prof. Feng Xu, Prof. Hanwen
Yu, and Prof. Steven C. Reising
on their election by the GRSS
membership to three-year
terms on the AdCom beginning
in 2023. To fill the remaining
AdCom positions,
in November, the GRSS AdCom
elected Dr. Sidharth
Misra, Prof. Saibun Tjuatja,
and Dr. Josée Lévesque to three-year terms beginning
in 2023 and Dr. Nathan Longbotham to a two-year term
beginning in 2023. The GRSS AdCom also elected Prof.
Tjuatja as executive vice president and Dr. Mariko Burgin
as president for 2023. Congratulations to all newly elected
AdCom members and officers. I am confident that the
GRSS will continue to be successful in years to come with
your leadership.
Next, I would like to announce that in September, GRSS
formally selected the Local Organizing Committee (LOC)
from Washington D.C., USA, to host IGARSS 2026. The
meeting is currently planned for the third week of
July 2026. Congratulations to Prof. Liping Di and Dr. Mitch
Goldberg, general cochairs of IGARSS 2026! Please note
that the call for proposals for IGARSS 2027 from IEEE
Region 8 (Europe/Middle East/Africa) is currently posted
on the GRSS website. Interested groups should submit a
letter of intent and a preliminary proposal (preproposal)
to the GRSS vice president of meetings and symposia
(vp_meetings_symposia@grss-ieee.org) by 1 March 2023.
In October and November, there were some organizational
changes to the GRSS leadership. First, I would like
to thank Dr. James Smith for his work in restructuring the
Distinguished Lecturer program over the past two years. It
has been a difficult time with COVID impacting travel and
meetings during this time. In October, Dr. William (Bill)
Blackwell agreed to lead the program going forward. Accordingly,
I am sure the program will continue to enjoy success
and represent the best of the GRSS. I would also like
to recognize Prof. Simonetta Paloscia, who has now served
the maximum of two years as the chair of the GRSS Fellows
Evaluation Committee. For 2023, Prof. Antonio Plaza,
formerly the vice chair of the committee, has kindly agreed
to serve as the committee chair. Thank you both for your
service to GRSS over the past years.
In November, IEEE publishes the Fellows class of the
upcoming year. This year, I'd like to recognize Prof. James
Garrison of Purdue University; Prof. Gabriele Moser of the
University of Genoa; Prof. Jonathan Li of the University of
Waterloo; and Prof. Ping Yang of Texas A&M University on
their recent elevation to the grade of IEEE Fellow effective
1 January 2023. As in the past, we will be honoring our
newly elected Fellows at IGARSS.
In October, I was pleased to participate, along with others
in GRSS, in the IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) Student
Leadership Conference held on 28-30 October in Charlotte,
NC, USA. The three-day event featured technologies
and representatives from IEEE Societies. Not only did
I learn a lot about current trends from talks provided by
sponsoring organizations and keynote speakers, but I also
enjoyed talking with many students about their career perspectives
and how IEEE and the GRSS can help them by
providing networking and information about a wide variety
of opportunities. Figure 2 shows Dr. Mehmet Ogut talking
with students at the HKN event.
This year, the Society again supported the Asian Conference
on Remote Sensing (ACRS) 2022, which was held
in Ulan Bator, Mongolia, on 3-5 October and organized
in hybrid mode. The conference featured keynote speakers
from Japan, Mongolia, and India. The technical program
also program featured an opening ceremony; four parallel
technical session tracks; tutorials; and awards. My thanks
to Dr. Paul Rosen, the director of GRSS Global Activities,
for providing a welcoming address from the GRSS as part of
the ACRS opening ceremony.
Finally, I would like to highlight the GRSS and member

contributions to the UN Framework Convention on Climate
Change, Conference of the Parties (COP) 27, held in
Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in November. Prof. Irena Hajnsek
contributed to a session titled " Space Sciences and Climate
IEEE GEOSCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2022
