c) specify a program of the in-field activities for each site in
order to guarantee economy, efficiency and effectiveness;
d) deal with all the logistics for the progress of the campaign, including the instruments to deploy in the field,
the required documents to travel around the area, arrangements and the involvement of local authorities [30]. For
example, surveys addressed to data calibration have to be
accomplished as close as possible to the sensor overpass.
This requirement allows for highly accurate data calibration, since each element in the in-situ and remote datasets
shall be acquired under similar conditions. However, the
statistical representativeness of the in-situ measurements
for data calibration purposes is strongly dependent on the

time constrains and, in turn, requires that the selected
targets are easily accessible, measurable, and distributed
within a relatively small area.
The spectral targets to be measured, in order to properly characterize the dynamic range of radiance within the
study area, are selected according to their adequacy to the
following criteria:
◗ high spatial homogeneity, compared with the spatial
resolution of the imagery dataset; in the ideal case, each
target covers an area of approximately 3 # 3 squared pixels in the reference imagery
◗ representativeness of the dynamic range of radiance in
the region
