in an along-track direction results in significantly improved
space-based GMTI performance [66], which enables a tactically relevant proficiency by being capable of relocating detected movers onto the right side of the road.
CONCLUSIONS
This article presented an overview of the systems and different approaches employed for the detection of groundmoving targets using ATI-SAR systems. In particular, spaceborne and airborne systems were considered with regard
to the more recent sensors, such as TerraSAR-X, RDS-2, and
GAOFEN-3. The statistical model of the signal acquired by
a multibaseline ATI-SAR system, whose images exhibit an
ATI phase in correspondence with targets moving with a radial velocity, was explicated for deterministic and random
target responses. Homogenous and heterogeneous clutter
was also considered. Both phase-only and amplitude and
phase methods were described, using CRLBs as a reference
for velocity estimation and the experimental ROC curves as
a reference for detection performance. Real data results regarding spaceborne and airborne systems, and vessels and
cars as targets were shown.

II, Italy, in 1996 and 1999, respectively. She is currently an
associate professor at the Department of Engineering, Università degli Studi di Napoli "Parthenope." Her main scientific interests focus on statistical signal processing, with applications in data and signals compression and coding, and
on remote sensing, with applications in synthetic aperture
radar (SAR) processing, SAR tomography, and interferometry. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
Christoph H. Gierull (christoph.gierull@drdc-rddc.gc.ca)
received the Dr.-Ing. degree from Ruhr-Universität, Bochum,
Germany, in 1995. Since 2000, he has been a senior defense
scientist with Defence Research and Development Canada,
Ottawa, where he became a group leader of space-based radar in 2010. Since 2011, he has been appointed as an adjunct
professor at Université Laval, Quebec, Canada, and since
2017, an adjunct professor at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada. He was granted a Canada/U.S. patent on vessel detection in synthetic aperture radar imagery.
He was elected a fellow of the Institution of Engineering and
Technology. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
Vito Pascazio (vito.pascazio@uniparthenope.it) graduated summa cum laude in electronic engineering from the
Università di Bari, Italy, in 1986. In 1990, he received the
Ph.D. degree in electronic engineering and computer science from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Università di Napoli Federico II, Italy. Currently, he is a full professor at the Department of Engineering at the Università di
Napoli "Parthenope," Italy. His research interests include

remote sensing, image processing, and linear and nonlinear
estimation, with particular emphasis on image computing
and processing and reconstruction of microwave and radar

graduated cum laude in electronic engineering at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. From 1985 to 1986, she
was at the European Space Agency, ESTEC, Noordwijk,
The Netherlands. In 1988, she joined the Istituto di Ricerca per l'Elettromagnetismo e i Componenti Elettronici,
Naples, Italy. In 1998, she joined the University of Cassino
as an associate professor of telecommunications, and in
2005 she became a full professor. Since 2008, she has been
with the University of Naples "Parthenope," Italy. Her
main scientific interests are in the field of signal processing for remote sensing applications. She is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
