Special issue on "AI Innovation in Geoscience and Remote Sensing"
Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a growing role in geoscience and remote sensing. Applications of
AI range from bias correction to retrieval algorithms. AI innovation in the remote sensing market
continues to expand at a breath-taking pace. The world of geoscience is also changing dramatically,
driven by rapid advances in sensor and digital technologies. This digital revolution, accompanied
by a sensing revolution, is providing an unprecedented amount of data on the state of our planet
and its changes. However, these revolutions come with new challenges for scientists and
businesses, as well as data and software providers to make sense of the vast and diverse amount of data by capitalizing
on new techniques such as AI. This special issue focuses on recent progress in developing AI methodology with a
variety of Earth science and remote sensing applications. The modern exploration geologist, for example, deals with
large amounts of data and needs the best and highest quality technology that can help in overcoming the planets'
greatest challenges.
Expected impact. This special issue aims to gather researchers and practitioners in helping to unlock the capabilities
of artificial intelligence for use in geoscience and remote sensing. It will provide ideas about developing models and
retrievals for extracting features, detecting changes and predicting physical situations using artificial intelligence.
Format and preliminary schedule. Submissions to the special issue will be conducted as a two-step procedure: first,
a short white paper (4 pages in double column format) will be provided. The white paper will summarize the foreseen
objectives of the paper and discuss the importance of the addressed topic, the impact of the contribution, and the
authors' expertise and past activities on the topic. Based on the white papers, the guest editors will select the
contributions and invite authors to submit full papers. Only tutorial- or review-like papers, covering a wide spectrum
of themes, will be invited to the second phase. Full papers will then be peer-reviewed by international experts and
those accepted for publication will be included in the special issue.
White papers should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/grsm using the Manuscript Central

for guidelines and information on paper submission. Submitted articles should not have been published or be under
review elsewhere. All submissions will be peer reviewed according to the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing
Magazine guidelines.
