Why Does GRSM Require
the Submission of White Papers?
A
s you have already guessed from the title, and in line
with my editorial in the March 2023 issue, I will
use my space here to address two different points. First,
the reader will find a summary of the contents of this
issue, which is useful to those who would like to quickly
navigate the issue and read only what they are interested
in. The second part of this editorial will be devoted instead
to better explaining the concept of a white paper,
which is central to the editorial policy of this journal.
GRSM ISSUE CONTENT
This issue of IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine
(GRSM) includes the right blend of technical articles and
columns with reports and information sharing by some
of the committees and directorates of the IEEE Geoscience
and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS). Indeed, this
issue contains three technical articles, tackling a few of
the most interesting issues in Earth observation (EO)
data processing. The first article, titled " Taking Artificial
Intelligence Into Space Through Objective Selection
of Hyperspectral Earth Observation Applications, " [A1]
starting from a review of the potential EO use cases that
may directly benefit from onboard hyperspectral data
analysis, introduces a procedure for the objective, quantifiable,
and interpretable selection of onboard data
analysis applications.
Similarly, the article " Onboard Information Fusion
for Multisatellite Collaborative Observation: Summary,
Challenges, and Perspectives " [A2] summarizes,
analyzes, and studies issues involving multisatellite
data onboard intelligent fusion processing, showing
how strong is the need for a shift from efficient data
exploitation on the ground toward effective, although
computationally lightweight, onboard data processing.
Finally, the article titled " AI Security for Geoscience
and Remote Sensing: Challenges and Future
Digital Object Identifier 10.1109/MGRS.2023.3277221

Trends " [A3] provides a systematic and comprehensive
review of artificial intelligence (AI) security-related research
in remote sensing applications.
As for column articles, there is a very interesting
" Perspectives " column by Dr. Nirav Patel [A4], " Generative
Artificial Intelligence and Remote Sensing: A
Perspective on the Past and the Future, " devoted to explaining
the background, the current status, and the
possible issues related to the use of generative deep
learning models in EO data. This thought-provoking
article shows the increasing importance that generative
deep learning methods are taking in image processing
and the attention they deserve in EO as well as
in artificial data generation in general. The potential
misuse of these systems, originally designed to provide
additional samples to supervised interpretation techniques,
opens new research paths and asks new questions
about data reliability that have not been considered,
so far, from the EO data user community.
The next column reports on the first Summer School
of the Image Analysis and Data Fusion (IADF) Technical
Committee (TC) [A5]. This TC is well known in the
GRSS community and beyond because of the organization
of the yearly Data Fusion Contest. A specific organizing
committee made it possible to realize the first
GRSS IADF School on Computer Vision for Earth Observation,
held as an online event from 3 to 7 October
2022. The event was a success, with 85 selected participants.
The material distributed in the school is available
via the GRSS YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.
com/c/IEEEGRSS.
Finally, two columns provide updates about important
activities by the Standards TC [A6] and the first
ideas from the brand-new Remote Sensing Environment,
Analysis, and Climate Technologies (REACT) TC.
[A7] Specifically, the first column provides a first outlook
on the guidelines for the EO community to create/
adapt Analysis Ready Data formats that integrate with
various AI workflows.
