The Third China International
Synthetic Aperture Radar Symposium
F
rom 2 to 4 November 2022, the third China International
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Symposium
(CISS), sponsored by the Shanghai Institute of Satellite
Engineering, was successfully held at the Jinjiang Metropolo
Hotel Minhang, Shanghai. The CISS is an international
academic conference with extensive authority,
knowledge, and interaction. The symposium aims to
build a high-level and international academic communication
platform for scholars and researchers in the
SAR field, lead the direction of technology development
in the SAR field, and promote technology innovation in
related fields. CISS 2022 was technically cosponsored by
IEEE and the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society
(GRSS). More than 180 invited experts and scholars
from China, Germany, New Zealand, Poland, and other
countries assembled to discuss the latest developments
and achievements in SAR-related areas, including hardware
systems, processing techniques, advanced applications,
and so on. CISS 2022 was held online and offline,
and more than 150 participants attended offline live
events. Nine experts (Figure 1) gave keynotes during the
opening ceremony. During the conference, 72 researchers
presented their work in oral form, while 94 reports
were presented in poster form.
Prof. Hui Wang, director of the Shanghai Institute
of Satellite Engineering and Shanghai Key Laboratory
of Aerospace Millimeter Wave Information Technology,
served as the chair of the conference. The opening
ceremony was presided over by Dr. Shichao Zheng, a
senior engineer from the Shanghai Institute of Satellite
Engineering. Prof. Wang and Vice President Chunming
Zhang, Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology,
delivered speeches welcoming the participants. In addition,

tions were invited to attend the opening ceremony. Prof.
Wang; Prof. Alberto Moreira, Institute of Microwave and
Radar, German Aerospace Center; Prof. Piotr Samczynski,
Warsaw University of Technology; Prof. Alejandro C.
Frery, Victoria University of Wellington; Prof. Jiancheng
Shi, National Space Science Center, Chinese Academy
of Sciences; Prof. Feng Xu, Fudan University; Prof. Wei
Yang, Beihang University; Prof. Guangcai Sun, Xidian
University; and Prof. Shuangxi Zhang, Northwestern
Polytechnical University, gave excellent keynote presentations
(Figures 2-7).

Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof. Mengdao
Xing, Xidian University; Prof. Feng Wang, Fudan
University; Prof. Shaohui Mei and Prof. Baolong Wu,
Northwestern Polytechnical University; Prof. Jiao Guo,
Northwest A&F University; and Prof. Jing Wen, Nanchang
Hangkong University, posed questions about
each keynote, and the experts answered the online and
onsite questions wonderfully. More than 110 authors
from Fudan University, Harbin Institute of Technology,
Beihang University, Northwestern Polytechnical
University, Xidian University, and other domestic and
foreign universities and research institutions participated
in the conference offline. Not only that, more than
60 authors, scholars, and experts participated online.
Through the combination of online and onsite venues,
experts and scholars from all around the world shared
ideas and experiences on issues that promote the technological
development and innovation of SAR and related
SAR fields.
The conference included three subvenues for the
third day and morning of the fourth. Furthermore, 74
oral presentations were successfully presented by authors
(Figure 8), which were selected from all papers
submitted to these three subvenues. In SAR systems,
SAR advanced subsystems, SAR applications, processing
techniques, and SAR satellite, many important and
