prospective authors be asked to submit a full article, with
no length limit.
Column papers, instead, must be submitted as full
papers, although they usually cannot be longer than five
pages in the IEEE double-column submission format. They
are evaluated by the column editor together with one or
more reviewers, who are asked to evaluate the completeness,
clearness, and correctness of the content, not the scientific
novelty, of the article. GRSM aims at having at least
one column of each type in each issue; hence, the column
editors will be asked to proactively look for submissions in
their own area.
Finally, as already mentioned, GRSM accepts proposals
for special issues. In the following months, we will
put in place a unique procedure to evaluate and eventually
approve these proposals. To this aim, a standard
template is already available to those who are willing to
write a proposal, and it can be obtained by contacting
me directly. In the next few weeks, a web portal will be
developed to allow for more efficient submission. The
editorial board has decided that a proposal should introduce
the overall topic of the special issue and articulate
the intended content, applications, and style of the
contributions. The guest editors should
also describe potential subdivisions of
the contribut ions into separate sessions.
Moreover, the main motivation of
the proposed special issue should be described
in terms of its expected impact,
timeliness, and quality of contributions.
The submission should also include a
clear description of the relevance of the
proposal to geoscience and remote sensing
and to the scope of GRSM. In agreement
with the approach and style of the
magazine, the guest editors should strive
to create a balanced mix between ensuring
scientific depth and dissemination to
a wide public, which would encompass
remote sensing scientists, practitioners,
and students.
These are the first steps toward keeping
this magazine in line with its scope, as
mentioned on our webpage at https://www.
grss-ieee.org/publications/geoscience-and
-remote-sensing-magazine/, but also toward
making it more effective to connect
the community of communities that constitutes
our membership. GRSM will always
be a venue for publishing " high-quality
technical articles that by their very nature
do not find a home in journals requiring
scientific innovation but that provide
relevant information to scientists, engineers,
end users, and students who interact in different
ways with the geoscience and remote sensing disciplines. "
At the same time, it will be the place where the
different committees and venues where GRSS members
meet and work together
can describe what they
are doing, announce their
events, and publicize and
report their great work.
A scientific magazine has
this peculiar role, different
from that of purely scientific
journals, such as IEEE
Transactions on Geoscience
and Remote Sensing, IEEE
Journal of Selected Topics in
Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, IEEE Geoscience
and Remote Sensing Letters, and IEEE Journal of
Miniaturized Air and Space Systems.
I promise that the GRSM editorial board will always
have these aforementioned points in mind while
working to make this magazine ever more useful to
our membership.
