weak light, and geomagnetic anomalies in polar regions and
reconstruct high-resolution orthomosaics and DEMs. The
quality of UAV SfM products has also been improved using
the GNSS-supported aerial triangulation georeferencing approach.
Diverse sensors with varied uses can be installed on
UAVs, allowing the drones to collect high-resolution multispectral,
hyperspectral, thermal, and stereo data based on
specific demands. UAV data from the same glacier area can
be shared and aggregated in the future to create a larger database
for joint research [8]. Additionally, the application of
UAVs to the monitoring of the glacial microtopography (including
rifts and crevasses, surface subsidence, and melting
ponds), ice surface landforms, atmosphere, flora and fauna,
sea ice, and subglacial environment have been described. In
this study, the rapid development of UAVs in polar regions
was summarized, the development status of related research
fields was recorded and analyzed, and suggestions for future
developments in related fields were provided.
With an ever-changing global climate, the AIS is continuously
changing. Before inferring the small-scale changes in
the ice sheet surface, it is necessary to repeatedly observe and
analyze them. This study compiled and reviewed over 90 articles
to demonstrate that UAVs play a significant role in Antarctic
polar research, significantly filling the present research
gap. We believe that UAVs will also provide a unique opportunity
for comprehensive glaciology research in the face of
the growing climate uncertainty.
