environment. The 42nd IGARSS set out to serve as a motivation
for researchers, scientists, and engineers to discuss
and share research outcomes that can overcome national,
regional, and global issues. Dr. Hean Teik wished all attendees
a productive, fruitful, and safe conference.
The welcome address was followed by the opening speech
by YB Dato' Sri Dr. Adham bin Baba, minister, Ministry of
Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) [Figure 16(b)].
He welcomed all participants to IGARSS 2022 in Kuala Lumpur,
a special opportunity since Malaysia had just opened
its borders on 1 April 2022 after coronavirus measures had
been eased.
The 42nd IGARSS has had many successful predecessors
in numerous countries. It was initiated in 1980 by the GRSS
to bring together the global community of geoscience and
remote sensing scientists. Remote sensing now plays a vital
role in everyone's daily live, as it provides essential information
on monitoring and forecasting climate and weather
change, macroscale land use changes, and monitoring and
protecting borders. It has undergone great changes in the
last decade, with new observation platforms and more
sufficient and reliable data becoming available. Remote
sensing specialists will employ machine and deep learning
techniques, capable of handling large and diverse remote
sensing datasets from satellites, such as Copernicus, Landsat,
and Sentinel to better observe Earth.
Since 1988, Malaysia has utilized the advancements of
space remote sensing technology for various applications,
such as agriculture, natural resources and disaster, environment,
community, and environmental health management.
To date, up to 40 applications based on space remote sensing
have been developed, such as the Fishing Site Identification
system, which has benefitted more than 30,000 local fishermen
and has increased yields up to 50%. This and other
applications as well as the intelligent use of space remote
sensing data have helped to reduce government expenditure
by more than 49.8 million Malaysian ringgit since 1988.
Dr. Adham bin Baba illuminated the advancements to
be expected through the implementation of the National
Space Policy 2030, developed by MOSTI and executed
through the Malaysian space agency, MYSA. At least 90 applications
based on space remote sensing technology will
be developed, such as forest monitoring, integrated disaster
management, and dengue outbreak monitoring systems.
The rich program of IGARSS 2022
featured the latest research in areas such
as data analysis and management, land
and atmosphere application, sensors,
and calibration. The vibrant exchange
among participants created awareness
in the field of remote sensing and promoted
collaborative research to come
up with innovative ideas for addressing
climate change and global food
security issues.

lated the organizers for the meticulous
planning of IGARSS 2022 and
extended his appreciation to all supporting
institutions. He concluded his
opening speech by expressing high
hopes that this symposium would be
beneficial for each attendee.
The opening speech was followed
by the ceremonial launch of IGARSS
2022. For this, the logo of the symposium
was unveiled by Dr. David
Kunkee, Azlikamil Napiah, YB Dato'
Sri Dr. Adham bin Baba, Prof. Tan
Sri Dato' Dr. Chuah Hean Teik, and
Prof. Dr. Ewe Hong Tat.
