The 2018 MTT-S Graduate Student Fellowship Awards

T

he IEEE Microwave Theory and
Techniques Society (MTT-S) graduate student fellowship awards
are sponsored by the MTT-S for the
purpose of encouraging and supporting graduate students from around the
world who are interested in pursuing the field of microwave engineering. The graduate fellowship honorees
receive an award of US$6,000, which
is presented at the annual IEEE MTT-S
International Microwave Symposium
(IMS), to support their research activities. Supplemental funding is offered
to the recipients to support their travel
to IMS.
Ten graduate fellowships were awarded in 2018 in the general category and
two in the medical applications category. To be eligible for these graduate fellowships, applicants must be
full-time students in a recognized M.S.
or Ph.D. degree program. Full details

.org/students. The submission deadline for the 2019 awards is 15 October
2018 (see "An Invitation to Pa r t ic i pate in IEEE MTT-S Education Committee Initiatives").
For the 2018 awards, 47 applications
from 20 countries were received in the
general category, and 13 applications
from seven countries were received in
the medical category. All the applications were excellent and represented
some of the best research being conducted around the world. The overall
success rate was 20% due to the large
number of submissions. The difficult
task of selecting the awardees was
p e r f o r m e d by a g roup of de d ic a ted, impartial MTT-S volunteers from
both industry and academia. Special
thanks to the volunteers who spent
many hours reviewing and grading
the proposals.

Mohamed Mounir
Abdin
School: University of
South Florida, United States.
Advisor: Prof. Tom
Weller.
Project topic: An additively manufact u r e d, packaged 75-
110-GHz communication system.
Mohamed Mounir Abdin is pursuing a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at the University of South
Florida (USF), Tampa, United States,
and is expected to graduate in 2019. In
2010, he earned his B.Sc. degree in
electrical engineering from the Arab
Academy for Science and Technology,
Alexandria, Eg y pt. Before joi n i ng
USF, Abdin worked for three years
as a process engineer at IMT, a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)
foundry in California. His research
interests include millimeter-wave circuit
design using additive manufactured
packaging techniques to facilitate the
widespread adoption of fifth-generation (5G) technologies.
