Such leadership requires outstanding personal and professional

The Benefits of Volunteering
I would urge that every volunteer, at
every tier, reflect on his or her personal and professional achievements
and impact through the effort of volunteering. It may translate into individual happiness and satisfaction or
new-found passions or opportunities.
It may lead to important leadership
roles and memorable collaborations.
All of these are what inspire us to volunteer for the MTT-S. Volunteering is
a win-win strategy for professionals,
and I hope that more and more MTT-S
members will become long-term, engaged volunteers.
Finally, I would like to supplement
what Julie Shoop, editor-in-chief of
the American Society of Association
Executives's Associations Now, wrote in
her January/February "Editor's Note"
with my own observations. Volunteer
leadership that helps the MTT-S thrive
relies on the same qualities that drives
success in our community: a commitment to long-term strategies, a
willingness to take smart risks, and
an openness to viewpoints that may
not always feel comfortable-all in
the service of achieving mission goals.
In other words, volunteer leadership
requires vision enabled by discipline
and, occasionally, courage.
I am very proud of the joint efforts
and endeavors of our volunteers
and staff in creating a very productive and harmonious work environment that allows the MTT-S to excel
inside and outside the IEEE. As the
2016 MTT-S president, I want to show
my heart-felt gratitude to all MTT-S
volunteers for their various contributions to the building of a great and
successful professional society. We
need more volunteers who can further energize the MTT-S to reach the
next level. I appeal to everyone in
our community to volunteer at least
five hours a month to the MTT-S. To
facilitate this, we are opening a special channel for recruiting new volunteers, which will be announced
through our recently restarted MTT-S
newsletter. Stay tuned!
