Finding One's Way to Microwaves

M

icrowave engineering fascinates me. However, other
than an early experiment
using an AM radio receiver that consisted of an antenna, resonator, diode
detector, and headphones, I did not
start in microwave electronics or radio.
My interest in electronics began with
audio equipment and acoustics.
The key here is that I got interested
in waves, which pushed me into learning mathematics and physics; with that
foundation, I could understand other
types of waves. Finally, I became fascinated with the physics of waves.
Along the way I met many interesting people-and some of them were
real characters. If you think power
amplifier designers can be interesting, then I suggest you find a table full
of filter or antenna designers at next
month's International Microwave Symposium (IMS) reception. And if you
really like math, find a table of people
talking about signal processing or
field theory.
