to analyze the network parameter
such as Z-impedance, Y-admittance,
h-hybrid, ABCD, and S-parameters for
high-frequency networks. A MATLAB
script for network analysis and parameter conversion of RF amplifiers is also
included. Many examples are given to
clearly show how to apply the theory
to solve a practical problem.
This chapter also includes a very
useful discussion of RF device measurement and test-fixture design and
measurement. Many charts, graphs,
and pictures are in color. CAD software programs covered here include
MATLAB and Ansoft Designer CPW.
The frequency range of the examples
provided goes from a few megahertz up to 700 MHz. The author
uses a TO-247 packaged MOSFET to
model the transistor network parameters. A de-embedding technique that
removes the test-fixture capacitance
and inductance from component
measurement is also given. Many
equations at the college algebra level

are provided here, so the discussions
are easy for students to follow.
Chapter 4, "Resonator Networks
for Amplifiers," covers resonant
networks, transmission lines, Smith
charts, and impedance-matching
networks. The resonator network
discussion includes RL, RC, and
LC circuits and parallel, series, and
coupling effects. Each topic includes
equations, response charts, examples,
and MATLAB script lists. The chapter describes how RF power amplifier
design utilizes the filter and resonator to eliminate spurious content and
oscillation, creating a stable amplifier.
Chapter 5, "Impedance Matching
Networks," explains the purpose of
impedance-matching networks for
power amplification and the implementation of the matching network.
The use of Smith charts for impedance and admittance is explained, and
various examples are given of twoelement impedance transformation
using a Smith chart. At high frequency,

single-stub tuning is explained. The
frequency range of most of the examples is around 4 GHz.
Chapter 6, "Couplers, Multistate
Reflectometers, and RF Power Sensors
for Amplifiers," includes a detailed
discussion of power-sensing devices
at the amplifier subsystem level, directional couplers, and power dividers.
It begins with the basics of two-line
microstrips and then moves on to
three-line microstrip directional couplers. This chapter includes examples
using Ansoft Designer and MATLAB to simulate two-line and threeline couplers at 300 MHz with Teflon
substrates, as well as an example of a
six-port transformer-coupled 20-dB
directional coupler at 27.12 MHz.
Chapter 7, "Filter Design for RF
Power Amplifiers," discusses using
power amplifier filters to eliminate
spurious and harmonic contents. It
covers lumped and distributed elements. Examples include steppedimpedance resonator bandpass
filters, edge/parallel-coupled filters, and half-wavelength resonator
bandpass filters. A few MATLAB
scripts for filter design are listed.
Chapter 8, "Computer-Aided
Design Tools for Amplifier Design
and Implementation," presents the
design process and a design-flow
diagram, and it discusses the analysis, simulation, and experimental
phases for hybrid packaged devices.
The book is truly written for the
RF power amplifier designer and
students alike. The content is just
at the right level, and the examples
are very helpful and easy to apply
to practical design work. The color
graphs, charts, and pictures are
excellent. There are many design
programs written in MATLAB; if
the author can post these MATLAB
scripts on the downloadable website, it would double the value of the
book. The book also includes homework problems at the end of each
chapter. By incorporating a test bank
and PowerPoint slides for the classroom instructor, this book would
become an excellent teaching textbook at the undergraduate level.
