Different Perspectives

I
attended the International Microwave Symposium (IMS) in
San Francisco last May. The
Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference (WIE ILC) was taking
place in nearby San Jose at
the same time, so I took advantage of the opportunity
to experience that event too. It
made for an interesting comparison. At the IMS, the vast majority
of attendees, as usual, were male. At
the WIE ILC, the vast majority of attendees were female. While that's an
obvious difference, the contrasts ran
much deeper.
The IMS is a traditional event, now
in its 59th year. It's large, drawing over
10,000 attendees. It's stable, with attendance and features varying only modestly year after year. It has all the features
of a traditional scholarly conference plus
an exhibition and related commercial
events. I have only missed a few over the
last three decades. My professional community is there.
The WIE ILC is an innovative event,
now in its third year. It started small and

has grown dramatically, with 1,350 attendees this year. While it shares some
aspects of a traditional scholarly con-
ference, it expands from those is many
ways. It's more inspirational. It's
much more informative regarding soft skills. It's more entrepreneurial. I sensed that, for
most attendees, their professional community was there.

sessions, panel sessions, keynotes, the exhibition, and interactive activities at the WIE
ILC (Figures 1 and 2). There was a
fair amount of technical content, but
much more than that. There was entrepreneurial content by women who
had started businesses. There was
practical career advice from women
