of DEEIT, Dr. Agus Bejo gave a few opening remarks and introduced Stoppa.
To motivate students to study IC
design fields, Stoppa shared his experiences and current research. He
described the trend of 3-D imaging

application in the future that mostly
relies on IC design. Stoppa also explained the history of why 3-D imaging is important and how to improve
3-D imaging techniques. One of the described techniques is using the direct
TOF concept that works like a radar
but is used like a light wave instead of
a radio wave. To stimulate discussion,

Stoppa asked the audience questions
about 3-D imaging techniques.
The lecture was followed by some
questions and more discussion. The
event concluded by Bejo presenting
Stoppa with a certificate of appreciation from the DEEIT.

SSCS Singapore Held Distinguished Lecture on
High-Performance Inertial Sensors by Prof. Xu Yong Ping

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS) Singapore Chapter, along
with the Institute for Microelectronics, Agency for Science, Technology
and Research, hosted Distinguished
Lecturer Prof. Yong Ping Xu of the
National University of Singapore on
26 October 2017 at the Fusionopolis
High-Tech Campus. Xu presented
the talk "High Performance Inertial Sensors."
Xu started his lecture by briefly
illustrating the use of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) inertial
sensors in various applications. In
the first part of the lecture, Xu discussed MEMS accelerometers. He
started with the structure of capacitive MEMS accelerometer devices,
electrical equivalents, and common
interface circuits. He highlighted
key specifications, such as noise
spectral density and bias instability and their performance levels
needed for inertial navigation. The
traditional capacitive MEMS accelerometers with open-/closed-loop
capacitive sensing do not reach the
stringent requirements on these key

tion application. Xu also introduced
the silicon oscillating accelerometer
with frequency-domain sensing. He
explained the design approach of
an exemplary circuit created by his
team at the National University of
Singapore jointly with their academic partners at the Nanjing University
of Science and Technology. This circuit exceeds the performance levels
in the key specifications needed for
inertial navigation.
The second part of the lecture
was on MEMS gyroscopes. Xu started
with an introduction on the working

of MEMS sensors that exploit Coriolis forces in angular rate sensing. He
also discussed the conventional amplitude controlled driving loop as
well as the common types of sensing circuits-the mode-matched and
split-mode sensing. He then brought
out the various nonidealities, such as
bias instability and quadrature error
and their mitigation. Finally, he presented a MEMS gyroscope interface
circuit designed by his team based
on the open-loop split-mode sensing
approach. The measurement results
of the gyroscope were presented,
