Prof. Youngcheol Chae Gives Distinguished
Lecture at the SSCS Central Texas Chapter

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society
(SSCS) Distinguished Lecturer Prof.
Youngcheol Chae, from Yonsei University, Korea, visited the University
of Texas in Austin on 4 May 2018.
Despite long international travel
and a significant time-zone difference, Chae gave two energetic and
inspiring talks. The first was "EnergyEfficient High-Resolution ADCs,"
and the second was "Energy-Efficient
Inverter-Based Amplifiers." Both talks
were well organized and comprehensive, covering all of the latest research
developments. The lectures were well
attended, drawing in more than 30
attendees, including both graduate students and local professionals, many of
whom were IEEE Members or Student
Members. After the talks, the audience asked questions, to which Chae
gave very insightful answers.

Instrumentation applications, such
as transducer readouts and smart
sensors, require precision analog-todigital converters (ADCs) with high
absolute accuracy and linearity as

often result in poor energy efficiency and high power consumption,
thus making them unsuitable for use
in battery-powered autonomous systems. This tutorial covers the design
of energy-efficient high-resolution
ADCs for sensor interfaces, which
include both architectural- and circuit-level techniques to maintain
energy efficiency. It also describes
practical design aspects from several design examples.

semiconductor (CMOS) technology
has enabled the system to decrease
power consumption and lower costs
while increasing reliabilit y. The
design of low-voltage op-amps often poses significant challenges in
scaled CMOS technology. Dynamic
amplifiers based on CMOS inverters have become a necessity to minimize power consumption in all
analog circuit blocks. This tutorial covers the design of energyefficient inverter-based amplifiers,
which includes recent advances to
maintain the performance of analog circuitry. It also presents design
examples of some state-of-the-art
inverter-based amplifiers.
