In Step with Daniel Friedman
Building a Community Through Solid-State Circuits Society Conferences
D
Daniel Friedman is an IEEE SolidState Circuits Society (SSCS) member-at-large, a dedicated father, and
a compassionate m e m b e r of the
IC community.
Daniel is currently a distinguished
research staff member and senior
manager of the Communications
Circuits and Systems Department at
the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research
Center in Yorktown Heights, New
York. In his role, Daniel manages
several teams. Key research areas in
his department include high-speed
wireline data communication; millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless circuits and imaging; advanced physical
design for large digital macros and
design tool support; and clocking and
exploratory circuits, including artificial intelligence applications. Daniel and his team take part in various
projects directed toward the needs of
IBM business, collaborative research
with external business partners, and
exploratory government-funded projects. "In projects supporting IBM businesses, our goal is to provide research
headlights that will help product teams
make decisions about future designs,"
he said.

Daniel with a few of his fantastic colleagues at IBM Research during a department outing.
Daniel received his doctorate from
Harvard University in 1992. His dissertation work was on sensorimotor
architectures with complementary
metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)
imaging and analog computation.
After graduation, he decided to stay
at Harvard for postdoctoral work in the
area of charge-coupled device imager
design. He was at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology Lincoln Labs,
Cambridge, for a brief period of time
and then joined IBM Research as an
analog circuit designer in the services,
