Reflections

As the year closes, my two-year term
as president of our IEEE Solid-State
Circuits Society (SSCS) also comes
to an end. I look back on two inspiring years during which the SSCS has
played a constant and positive role
in my life. I have enjoyed interacting
with many different people around
the globe and feel proud to be part
of this fantastic community.
The SSCS is proud of its high technical quality and impact on society
through the global semiconductor
industry. We continue to be one of
the strongest Societies of the IEEE and
are financially healthy. We offer top
journals in the field and financially
sponsor leading conferences, such as
the International Solid-State Circuits
Conference (ISSCC), Custom Integrated
Circuits Conference (CICC), Very LargeScale Integration (VLSI) Symposium,
Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference
(A-SSCC), and European Solid-State Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC).
The number of Society Chapters
continues to grow, along with our Distinguished Lecturer series, webinars,
and online educational resources. With
new initiatives from our Young Professionals and Women in Circuits committees, we aim to encourage our younger
members and continue to support diversity. Our membership has grown
to over 10,000 thanks to both longterm loyal members and the new and
upcoming younger generation.
With the launch of Plan S in Europe,
the pay to publish wave has reached

tunity for our Society to form a new
open-access journal, Open Journal
of Solid-State Circuits. With this, our
European members under Plan S
restrictions can continue publishing
in our venues. Jan Craninckx, former
editor-in-chief of our flagship IEEE
Journal of Solid-State Circuits, will be
the founding editor-in-chief of this
new journal. I would like to especially
thank our vice president of publications, John Long, for his guidance
during this process.

continues to grow,
along with our
Distinguished
Lecturer series,
webinars,
and online
educational
resources.

IEEE Solid-State Circuits Letters was
launched two years ago and has joined
our portfolio as a viable and valued
publication. Editor-in-Chief Behzad
Razavi has been innovative in the
copublication of selected ESSCIRC 2019
papers as well as special issues with
expanded papers from the 2019 ISSCC
and the 2019 VLSI Symposium.
This year, we introduced several
new Society-level awards.
■ The IEEE Brokaw Award for Circuit
Elegance, honoring those involved
in the invention of circuits where
just a few transistors suffice. Thank

you, Paul Brokaw, for your generous
donations!
■ The IEEE SSCS New Frontier Award,
honoring early career professionals who are exploring innovative and
visionary technical work within the
field of solid-state circuits.
■ The IEEE SSCS Innovative Education Award, honoring early- to midcareer individuals who are making
significant contributions to education in the field of solid-state circuits using innovative approaches.
■ The IEEE Industry Impact Award,
honoring individuals who have
had a seminal impact and made
distinctive contributions to the
field of solid-state circuits and the
IC industry.
■ The IEEE SSCS Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes
exceptional and distinguished service to the SSCS. The inaugural
award was presented to Anantha
Chandrakasan at ISSCC 2019 for
his service and dedication as conference chair of the ISSCC.

these new awards.
Our strategic plan, as initiated by
Past President Bill Bidermann (2014-
2015), is making available new products and services to ensure the Society
continues to be member focused. In
conjunction with our Administrative
Committee (AdCom) meetings, we
have introduced web-based premeetings where we share relevant data.
This allows AdCom members to think
more strategically during our in-person
