2019 Symposia on VLSI Technology and Circuits
Pushing the Limits of Semiconductors for a United and Connected World

Semiconductor technology has
emerged as a US$500 million industry and played a key role in transforming computing, finance, sensing,
entertainment, and communication
technologies for decades. As fundamental technological and economic
limits associated with semiconductors are pursued, it becomes increasingly important to adopt a combined
circuit-technology perspective. The
Symposia on VLSI Technology and Circuits, held at the RIHGA Royal Hotel
in Kyoto, Japan, in June 2019, fostered
this approach by bringing together
top experts in the field. This year's
theme, Pushing the Limits of Semiconductors for a United and Connected
World, encouraged the expression of
ideas to overcome perceived technical
limits. Although each symposium, one
on technology and one on circuits,
separately highlighted key technical
breakthroughs recently achieved, the

symposia paper presentation sessions
intentionally overlapped to provide
attendees the opportunity to learn
from and collaborate with individuals outside their immediate technical
focus. The symposia also included
joint circuits and technology focus
sessions and evening panels as well
as short courses and a demo session.

Beyond Human Limits
Although the theme of the symposia concerned pushing the limits of

semiconductors, discussion regarding pushing human limits by means
of semiconductor technology also
took place. The first circuit plenary,
"Virtual Cyborg: Beyond Human
Limits," given by Prof. Masahiko
Inami from the University of Tokyo,
addressed the possibility of a superhuman existence paralleling some
aspects of what was previously envisioned as science fiction. Inami
demonstrated the ability to make
opaque objects appear to be fully
transparent through the use of retroreflective screens as well as various
camera, projection, and computing
technologies. Using state-of-the-art
sensing, computing, and mechanical technology, human- computer
integration can overcome physical
limitations to level the playing field
so someone with disabilities can
enjoy playing sports with others of
different abilities.
In the second plenary session on
circuits, Dr. Sha Rabii of Facebook
delivered a vision of augmented reality
