Anticipating the Next Opportunity
The annual Symposia on VLSI Circuits and Technology are regarded
as the premier midyear gatherings
for the advancement of microelectronics technology and circuits. The
most recent symposia, held virtually in June 2020, achieved record
attendance of 1,412 participants as
well as a short-course record attendance of 903. The VLSI Technology
Symposium began in 1981, while the
VLSI Circuits Symposium was added
in 1987. The two meetings have been
held together ever since, rotating
annually between Japan and Hawaii.
In 2021, the symposia are scheduled to be held at the Rihga Royal
Hotel in Kyoto, Japan, on 13-18 June.
Given the success of this year's virtual format, the organizers plan
to incorporate the best features of
this year's symposia into future

The paper " A Pressure-Sensing Sys-tem with ±0.75 mmHg (3v) Inaccuracy for Battery-Powered Low-Power
IoT Applications, " by researchers affiliated with the University of
Michigan and CubeWorks, detailed
an advancement in piezoresistive
pressure sensors intended for tiny
small-form-factor and low-power
applications. Utilizing a highly dutycycled excitation of a Wheatstone
bridge-based sensor followed by
efficiency amplification and subranging ADC sampling, the system
achieved a state-of-art energy efficiency of 6.1 nJ per square millimeter of mercury (mmHg). The authors
demonstrated their tiny sensor integrated in a fully encapsulated system with a total volume of 20 mm3,
as displayed in Figure 4.
