Highlights of the 2022 IEEE Symposium
on VLSI Technology and Circuits

The IEEE Symposium on VLSI Technology
and Circuits began in 1981
and combined with a circuits symposium
in 1987. It started with a view to
have open technical exchanges and
reach out the hand of friendship originally
between researchers in Japan
and the United States and also to
bridge the divide between designers
and technologists. Now in its 42nd
year of delivering a unique convergence
of technology and circuits for
the global microelectronics industry,
that same ethos was brought back
to the fore once again as the conference
merged the two symposia into
one joint symposium of circuits and
technology. This full merger has
strengthened the VLSI Symposium
as the premier forum for the convergence
of solid-state state circuits and
technology development.
The conference has emerged from
being fully virtual for two years into a
new hybrid format of both in-person
and virtual events catering to both
those whose pandemic restrictions
have ended and to those still with
some limits on travel and movement.
For those who could travel, the return
of the in-person event, at the Hilton
hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, was
an exciting and refreshing experience
allowing many to reconnect with old
acquaintances and to exchange and
network with new contacts over 62
formal sessions and more informal
social events. Following the in-person

continued apace online the week after,
with on-demand content of prerecorded
technical talks and 30 online
live Q&A events, giving an opportunity
for further technical exchange
and social networking on the conference
app and virtual platform.
The New and Fully
Joint Symposium
Both the new joint symposium and
the new hybrid online/in-person
format succeeded in maximizing
the synergy across both domains
of technology and circuits with this
year's theme, " Technology and Circuits
for the Critical Infrastructure
of the Future. " There were multiple
events with joint appeal to circuit
and technology audiences alike:
plenary speakers, workshops, joint
short courses, panel discussions,
and both in-person and online Q&As
of the joint focus sessions.
The Friday forum " VLSI for Infrastructure
and Infrastructure for VLSI "
directly answered the conference
theme with five noteworthy in-person
presenters. Uwe Kirchner, Infineon,
and Jeff Cunningham, NXP, both
spoke on new and future opportunities
for semiconductors in vehicles
and transportation, from charging to
communications. Both Andrzej Strojwas,
PDF Solutions, and Sanjiv Mittal,
Applied Materials, delivered talks on
digitization and tools for high-yield
semiconductor manufacturing. Prof
Atsutake Kosuge, University of Tokyo,
spoke on sensors, accelerators, and
