design and physical integration facing
challenges as Moore's Law slows, area
scaling diminishes, and costs rise.
This becomes especially important in
miniaturized form factor applications
in smart watches, AR glasses, bendable
displays, and mobile, which are
looking to add more sensors but are
limited by the processing power and

Toppan presented a new " hybrid " timing scheme for an indirect ToF sensor, breaking the
long-distance-to-high-precision tradeoff, obtaining a 30-m range with <15-cm precision in
outdoor conditions (a) during the day (ambient: 100,000 lx) and (b) at night (ambient: <1 lx).

The evening panels gave the inperson
attendees much to consider.
In one session, Joe Macri, AMD, moderated,
while the panelists debated
and tried to predict the future, asking
whether the chip shortage would
continue and what it would take to
return to a healthy supply chain and
how to solve current issues. The following
evening, Robert Clark, Tokyo
Electron, moderated a panel of experts
discussing the challenges of the technology
development pipeline, from
the academic lab to mass manufacturing.
Prof Boris Murmann, Stanford
University, moderated another distinguished
panel discussing building the
microelectronics workforce for 2030:
the need of science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics in schools
and how to attract the best students
and what to teach them (in solid-state
circuits and more generally) before
they join the electronics sector.
This was aligned with a panel
and mentoring event targeted at students
and early career engineers,
" How to Maintain Your Wellness, Passions,
and Work-Life Balance in a
Hybrid Work Environment. " After the
panel, the audience was paired with
experienced mentors for stimulating
discussion on how to be part of and
lead remote teams and strategies for
self-awareness, resilience, and maintaining
personal energy in a career in
microelectronics. Both of these latter
events were sponsored by, and successfully
run by volunteers from, the
IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS),
IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS)
Young Professionals, and SSCS Women
in Circuits.
The demonstration session brought
Patrick delivered a fascinating plenary talk on challenges in SoC design.
